This is a lead sheet for an original bossa nova/jazz piece. The title, Não Sei Porque (I Don't Know Why...), is a nod to the Brazilian origins of the bossa nova style. The translation of said title is in parentheses. The piece is intended to be performed at approximately 135 bpm. It's a lively piece that can be performed in and arranged for any context in which you might perform any jazz standard. A variety of ensembles from high school to professional levels could perform it to a very warm reception. The audio file is my attempt at a standard big band arrangement. It was done in Finale 25 with instruments from Garritan's JABB 3 software. The interlude section is intended to be played after every solo in a manner similar to the way A Night in Tunisia is sometimes played. This isn't required of course. It's jazz! Improvise! Before tackling the final Piano Sonata I thought I'd take a little break from the 'serious' orchestrations and present this interpretation of Beethoven's charming set of Bagatelles, op. 126. Postdating (as far as I'm aware) the 9th Symphony, and certainly all the major piano works, these Bagatelles stand apart from the earlier sets, elevated beyond their status in spite of Beethoven's own 'kleinigkeiten' demonym for them. In particular, the final movement is in this version an extraordinary expansion on the previous 5, quoting as it does the infinity of the finale of the Op. 111 Piano sonata.

The magic of the sea, the beauty of ships, and fascination for the men who sail them, are fully explored in this five-movement epic work that relies heavily on sea shanties and folk material. In regarding the work in Bennett's own words, it had a lot to tell us about our struggles, triumphs, and defeats on the mighty ocean.
