Rather, Holst set these tunes in the same kinds of harmonies and textures that he was using in his other works, also taking the opportunity to experiment with other influences that were in the air at this time, an openness few of his British contemporaries shared. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. Thank you for your interest in this advanced piano solo piece I composed during the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic. I found a sense of hope and optimism from performing this light waltz, despite that the vaccine was still many months away at that point and things were looking grim.The waltz is written pretty much in an Intro-A-B-A'-Coda form. While the tempo is listed as “Moderately,” do not play it too quickly. There are some elements of B-flat Lydian interspersed.Regarding articulation: I use tenuto and accent + tenuto marks frequently in my compositions. I tend to use them mostly as indications for the melody and/or notes that should be emphasized or brought out. I never intend the accent + tenuto to be harsh, but it should be stronger than the tenuto alone.This is the first of eight waltzes for piano I composed between September 2020 and April 2024. I intend to have a collection of all eight available for sale in addition to individual pieces. This tune comes from The Gondoliers, the twelfth of the Victorian comic opera collaborations between WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.  The Gondoliers premiered in December 1889 and ran for 554 performances. To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1.  Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected.The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.  It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully.  To increase the difficulty, increase the tempo!

This trio was composed in August and September of 1978 and first performed on 5 October of that year at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.In every respect except its concision, it is modelled upon the chamber music of Max Reger: the oblique, floating tonality and the dance-like rhythms.Of its four movements, the first three are all written in 6/8 time, but they are nonetheless in three different meters: a slowish two, a very fast two, and a slow six.The first movement is in sonata form; its tonic triad does not appear in root position until the recapitulation.The scherzo is in G minor, with a trio tune in D-flat; nothing is lingered over, and it is all done in scarcely more than a minute.The slow movement is in C major, but spends most of its time roaming around distant harmonies -- and showing that they are not really so distant after all.The finale is a double fugue in sonata form.
