Bach  bwv 1029   This beautiful sonata (which could easily have been another Brandenburg concerto if Bach had chosen to orchestrate it)  is too good to be just for violists and cellists. So here’s an arrangement in the Treble clef, which can be played  by FLUTE, or VIOLIN, or SAX, or OBOE, or GUITAR instead of the original solo part in the viola clef.  Also,  the key has been transposed from G minor to A minor.  Except for 2 measures in the first movement it is all playable without any octave jumps.  (those 2 measures have the higher octave alternative written above the original for the wind instruments that can’t go down to A.) The accompanying keyboard part is available in many print editions and also can be downloaded from public domain sites like IMSLP. It was first published in 1867 under the title Klavierstück in A moll Keyboard Piece in A minor. The piece is written in 3/8 time and has the following musical form: Measures 1-8: Phrase 1 of the theme in A minor, a quiet melody played by the right hand accompanied by arpeggios in the left hand Measures 9-14: Phrase 2 of the theme, in C Major Measures 15-22: Phrase 1 returns in A minor Measures 23-37: Contrasting section in F major, modulating to C Major and back to A minor Measures 38-58: Theme returns (phrases 1-2-1) Measures 59-81: Contrasting agitated section set over a pedal point on A and ending in arpeggios and a chromatic descent Measures 82-end: Theme returns(phrases 1-2-1) Scholars do not agree as to whether there should be a D or an E in measure 7 (second note, right hand) and in subsequent similar passages. As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This collection of ten short medleys are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, some of which have been lost in more recent editions. Each set in the collection is also available individually. The audio clip is of the first set. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its accompaniment, harmony, or texture over the succeeding verses. A caveat: I have no delusions, and offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy and comfort to other technically challenged yet serviceable pianists such as myself.

This piece is inspired by the artwork of the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, specifically the less credited illustrator of the world famous deck, Pamela Colman Smith. The music represents the symbolism and feeling behind the High Priestess card, with keywords of strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust. Each instrument is featured throughout, as the main melody and distinct rhythms are traded and dovetailed around the ensemble. The piece begins with a feeling of watery calm (e.g. Venetian Boat songs), ascends to a hopeful journey, moves through tense trials, then returning back to the distant flute melody, followed by a piano “solo� that ultimately inspired this chamber work in the first place. This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional ensembles, as well as very advanced young chamber players looking for something new and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. In performance, be mindful of balance issues, so seating arrangement can be adjusted. I recommend the horn player be seated on the outside, so as not to cover up the flute. Average performance time: ca. 4:30Other instrumentations are in progress, so please check back for updated editions. The original instrumentation involved the oboe and cello.
