Morning Has Broken is a popular and well-known Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as Bunessan [1] (it shares this tune with the 19th century Christmas Carol Child in the Manger[2]). It is often sung in children's services and in Funeral services.[3]

English pop musician and folk singer Cat Stevens included a version on his 1971 album Teaser and the Firecat. The song became identified with Stevens due to the popularity of this recording. It reached number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number one on the U.S. easy listening chartin 1972,[4] and number four on the Canadian RPM Magazine charts.

The hymn originally appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (published in 1931), to the tune Bunessan, composed in the Scottish Islands. In Songs of Praise Discussed, the editor, Percy Dearmer, explains that as there was need for a hymn to give thanks for each day, English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon had been asked to make a poem to fit the lovely Scottish tune. A slight variation on the original hymn, also written by Eleanor Farjeon, can be found in the form of a poem contributed to the anthology Children's Bells, under Farjeon's new title, A Morning Song (For the First Day of Spring), published by Oxford University Press in 1957. The song is noted in 9/4 time but with a 3/4 feel.

Bunessan had been found in L. McBean's Songs and Hymns of the Gael, published in 1900.[5] Before Farjeon's words, the tune was used as a Christmas carol, which began Child in the manger, Infant of Mary, translated from the Scottish Gaelic lyrics written by Mary MacDonald. The English-language Roman Catholic hymnal also uses the tune for the James Quinn hymns, Christ Be Beside Me and This Day God Gives Me, both of which were adapted from the traditional Irish hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate. Another Christian hymn, Baptized In Water, borrows the tune. -Wikipedia

Easy Piano Duets for Beginners. Composed by Fritz Emonts. This edition: Sheet music. The European Piano Method. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q45895. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q45895).

From the very first piano lesson the teacher may and indeed should make music with his or her pupils. For the pupil, playing duets is - in most cases - the first encounter with the diverse forms of ensemble playing. Duet-playing is of such significant educational value that it should be nurtured continuously at all levels of piano study. As a result, rhythmic precision, a sense of tonal colour and expression, feel for texture, for melody and accompaniment, can be achieved with ease. The secondo parts are written so that they can also played by (more advanced) pupils. All the pieces are therefore suitable for group teaching.

For violin, cello, Northumbrian pipes, hammond organ and orchestra. Composed by Jon Lord. This edition: study score. Evening - architecture - dawn - architecture - cathedral - bagpipes - Durham - England - Great Britain - cathedral - Church - concerto - morning - afternoon - nocturne - Northumbrian pipes - program music - program music - students - Studies - Studies. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Duration 57' 0. Schott Music - Digital #Q52424. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q52424).

The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. The piece consists of six ‘pictures’ arranged into three parts – the morning, afternoon and evening of this imaginary Durham city. Jon Lord, 2017

Three Pieces for Chanukah is not so much a set of arrangements of familiar words and tunes than it is a set of original compositions based on them. The first two settings feature jazz-influenced, classical harmonic and melodic treatment of the tunes. The mood of the first setting is upbeat and the mood of the second one is more subdued. The mood of the third setting is extremely upbeat; it is composed in a straight funk style, albeit contrapuntal. The front matter to each edition features program notes, a pronunciation guide for the Hebrew words and the Hebrew and English texts.

Motet after Friedrich Rückert for Double Male Choir (Organ ad lib.). Composed by Robert Schumann. This edition: separate part. Downloadable, Individual part. Op. 93. Schott Music - Digital #Q50149. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q50149).

German.

At first described as 'religious song' by Schumann, the motet 'Verzweifle nicht' could be heard with organ accompaniment for the first time on 4 July 1850 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the University's choral society St. Pauli in Leipzig. He wrote the organ version specifically for this performance for he had originally planned an orchestral accompaniment. That, however, could only be completed later and was eventually premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both world premieres, mentioned 'the wonderful effect which the same has produced' and that, to him, 'the motet was one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature'.

The aim of this first sight-singing volume is to instil confidence in singers and to present a method of approaching all aspects of singing at sight. Many of the melodies follow familiar shapes and rhythms, and use sequences to aid recognition of these patterns. Singers are encouraged to observe how to obtain their starting note from the introduction and to note the help with their vocal line that can be found in the accompaniment. A teacher and pupil-friendly approach valuable to both singers and instrumentalists - styles recognisable to both student and teacher - simple piano parts with chord indications - progressive examples beginning with just 3 or 4 notes and simple time values.

By DaCapo Primary Music. By Jane Cutler and Tracey Mathias. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Educational Method. 94 pages. DaCapo Primary Music #904114. Published by DaCapo Primary Music (A0.1315388).

This Book Contains 68 songs for the instrumentalist.

This new edition of the DaCapo Complete Instrumentalist contains the same material as when first published in 2000, with one big change - many of the songs have been re-worded by our writer in residence, Tracey Mathias, to make them more engaging for very young children.

Singing is the foundation of all musical skills.

The book concentrates on the building of musicianship, is not clef specific and is therefore suitable for ANY instrument. It has been written on a reduced stave of 1, 2 or 3 lines in order to develop the skill of hearing the music from the page. The songs are classified by their note range, using solfa symbols and handsigns to identify relative pitches.

The collection starts with the  so  mi  interval and moves progressively to cover the complete major pentatonic scale. These intervals are easier to pitch accurately and you have the added advantage of working in canon. You may find another section more appropriate for the early stages of your instrument. A violinist or cellist may find the  so  do  section better as a starting point for example, whilst  la  so  might be more comfortable on a fife or recorder.

Each section starts with a list of ideas for very simple activities used to teach a song and establish it in the pupil's mind. There follows a variety of more complex and creative ideas which will enhance their musicianship. The activities are at three levels and we suggest that first you learn lots of the songs and then return to them later, tackling some of the more challenging suggestions.

Whilst every attempt has been made to research the source material, if you think we have not credited an original song please let us know.

We hope that you enjoy becoming a Complete Instrumentalist.

Jane Cutler

Air favori de l’opéra La muette de Portici de D.F.E. Auber. Composed by Christian Rummel. Edited by Rainer Mohrs and Rudolf Mauz. This edition: Sheet music. (c) 2020 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Classical. Downloadable. 12 pages. Schott Music - Digital #Q53273. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53273).

German • Danish.

Christian Rummel (also Chrétien Rummel), music educator, pianist, clarinettist, violinist and composer, was born in Gollachostheim, Franconia (Germany). He received his musical education in Mannheim. Rummel first worked as a military band director. Following his military career, he moved to Wiesbaden as he was offered a position as a music teacher there. Later he directed the court orchestra in Biebrich and following its dissolution, he directed the Wiesbaden theatre orchestra. On the occasion of a visit to Vienna, the publishers Schott recommended him to Ludwig van Beethoven (letter of 19th April 1824), with the request for ‘friendship and good will‘. He is said to have had an ‘urge for perfection through studying composition‘. This Schlummerlied is dedicated to Baron Breidbach-Bürresheim. The melody comes from the opera ‘La muette de Portici (The mute girl of Portici) by the composer Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782–1871), which was first performed at the Paris Opera House in 1828. The setting is a fishing village near Naples. The plot revolves around love, marriage, revolt against the Spanish occupying forces and, as if that were not enough, the volcano Vesuvius erupts at the end. The piece was published by Schott in 1832 (plate number 3733).
