This book had an important influence on Mozart’s early compositions.The pieces fall into three categories:

The first category includes songs and dances of a folk nature such as Jägerlied, Schwabentanz Schmiedecourante, Waldhornstück. The second category provides examples of compositions by Scarlatti, Bach, Händel, e.g. Fantasias, Allegros, Arias. The third group presents contemporary dance movements in the French style like Minuets, Courantes, Polonaises and Rondi.

Father Mozart included pieces in a variety of styles with the intention of helping Mozart not only to learn piano technique, but also elements of composition. The works are intentionally simple, one task for the boy being to fill out the incomplete harmonies. Overall, the technical standard is appropriate to the age and abilities of the player. Apart from its historical significance, the Notenbuch for Wolfgang Amadeus is a colourful collection of charming little pieces.

Pierre Danican-Philidor was a member of the highly respected Danican family of French musicians. He played the oboe, flute and viol and was a member of several orchestras. In the years 1717 and 1718 he published three volumes of music containing altogether twelve suites. The sixth suite (with the movements Lentement Rondeau Sarabande Rigaudon Gigue) is taken from the first volume and is immediately attractive though not too challenging for the player.

This chanson was composed in the Renaissance period by the Franco-Flemish composer. This secular work is one out of thirty chansons that de la Rue composed. It was published around 1502. Section A and C have the first theme. Section B and D have the second them. The arrangement here ends on a Picardy third.

Francesco Saverio Geminiani (geb. ca. 1680 in Lucca, gest. 1762 in Dublin), einer der größten Geiger seiner Zeit, war in Rom noch Schüler von Corelli und übersiedelte 1714 nac England, wo er als Solist, Konzertmeister, Pädagoge, Konzertunternehmer und - Gemäldehändler tätig war. Sein reiches Schaffen begann mit den Violinsonaten op. 1, die er 1705 in Bologna veröffentlichte. Elf Jahre später widmete er in London ein weiteres op. 1 dem aus dem Leben Händels bekannten Hofkämmerer Baron von Kielmannsegge, 12 Violinsonaten, die aber nicht mit dem Jugendwerk identisch sind. Der Titel dieses op. 1(a), das schon 1717 in Amsterdam nachgedruckt wurde, lautet: Sonate/ a Violino, Violone, e Cembalo/ dedicate/ All Illustrissimo et Excellentissimo Signore/ Il Sig': Barone di Kilmanns'egge./ Cavallerizzo Maggiore e Ciamberlano/ Di Sua Maestà Britanica/ e Elettore di Brunswick e Lunebourg/ da/ Francesco Geminiani/ Opera Prima... Geminani, dessen impulsive und insbesondere in dynamisch-agogischer Hinsicht fortschrittliche Spielart den Interpretationsstil seiner Zeitgenossen nachhaltig beeinflusst hat, war ständig bestrebt, seine älteren Werke dem sich rasch wandelnden Geschmack anzupassen. Sein op. 1(a) gab er 1739 in London in teilweiser Umarbeitung neu heraus (Nachdruck Paris ca. 1740) und kündigte auf dem Titel an Le Prime Sonate a Violino, e Basso di F. The Sonata for Viola and Piano (1984) is not based – as is common in the 'classical' sonata form – on the dualism of two opposing themes. The dialectics are in the juxtaposition of two homogenous movements of contrasting character. 'The Sonata ends with the chorale Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir in whose adaptation inner conflict and contrast remain the formative means until the end.'
