Campra's sacred music includes 5 books of petits motets, the polyphonic Missa ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, the Messe de mort, and a large number of grands motets. All these works demonstrate the composer's mastery of theatrical conventions - descriptive instrumental preludes and dramatically representative scenes are not uncommon - and their style is imbued with the worldly, fashionable Italianate spirit of the time. The Messe de mort is today one of the more frequently performed of Campra's sacred works and it is also one of the most enigmatic scores of his entire output. The occasion of its commission and first performance are unknown. Montagnier, however, proposes the hypothesis that the Messe de mort was expressly composed for the memorial service for Philippe II duc d'Orléans (Campra's patron since 1697) who died at Versailles on 4 February 1723.

It's not so much funk as it is sixteenth-note pop, with a strong vibraphone melody. The piece starts in 2/4 before transitioning to 3/4, adding a bit of flavor and variety to the piece.

This sonata in three movements is the first of a group of three sonatas for guitar by the Tyrolian composer and mandolin/guitar virtuoso  Leonhard von Call (1767-1815).The source for this edition is the clearly written manuscript of the three sonatas in the Boije guitar music collection of the National Library of Sweden, marked as Gi Boije 615.The manuscript seems to be based on a 1924 publication of the three sonatas by N. Simrock / Musikverlag / Berlin with catalogue number Verlag 763.Although Von Call was a virtuoso instrumentalist, he seems to have focused on teaching amateurs rather than performing. Consequently, much of his music is not of a very demanding nature, but still well composed and well suited to the instruments for which it was written.From about 1798 until his death in 1815 he was quite successful as a composer in Vienna, and  he composed and published about 150 works, mainly chamber music for different combinations and much vocal music with guitar accompaniment.

This is the first of two works by the successful Latvian composer for this instrumentation. It was written in 1977 and shows his early compositional style: while freely notated in the beginning, improvisational sections then change over to chordal passages with sharply accentuated rhythm. It is particularly in the freely notated parts of the work that birdcalls and nature sounds appear as onomatopoeic sounds. The particular challenge is not in the virtuosity of the individual part, but in creating the special atmosphere through perfect harmony. As in most other works by the composer, the bond with nature plays a special role. Unlike any other composer, he gives nature a musical voice.

As regards the organ sound, this piece was written in memory of the grand organ by E. A. Roethinger in Erstein and its first organist Victor Dusch. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA). This revised version of 1964 has recast the actors' parts into roles for singers. In addition, a scaled-down orchestration was made to suit performances in small theatres. The Magic Theatre is suitable as one part of a triptych, of which A Country Doctor forms the centre and The End of a World the third part. The Magic Theatre can still be performed with actors: for a production given at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin, on 30 September 1965 at the Berlin Festwochen, Henning Brauel made a version for a small ensemble designed to be performed in small theatres.
