The waltz was originally titled Hand in Hand and was intended as a toast made in August of that year by Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph I on the occasion of his visit to the German Emperor Wilhelm II where it was symbolic as a 'toast of friendship' extended by Austria-Hungary to the German Empire.Strauss' publisher, Fritz Simrock, suggested the title Kaiser-Walzer since the title could allude to either monarch, and thus satisfy the vanity of both rulers. The waltz was first performed in Berlin on 21 October 1889. In the first bars, the piece already captivates the audience with brilliant semiquaver figures and chord beats in classical toccata style which are tailored in a masterly fashion to the technical possibilities of the instrument. A reflective interlude (Adagio) brings some peace and quiet, playing with tonally charming triadic chains. The brilliant four-minute concert piece ends with a virtuoso finale.

This arrangement for cello octet (four voices very often divided in two) stems from a new collaboration with the brazilian cello master Marcio Carneiro, my personal cello teacher at the time of the HEMU of Sion, Switzerland. Its premiere, performed from manuscript paper, was given in 2012 and the wish to create a proper edition out of that has been a strong one ever since. The full score is proposed as a faithful adaptation of Verdi’s original text, allowing scholars and the performers alike to analyse the voices’ distribution within the eight cellos. The separate parts, instead, are for the first time given in two different versions: one faithful to the original range and more suitable for a group of cello virtuosi and a more simplified one to allow good amateurs to enjoy this marvellous piece as well.   Dynamics, left untouched in the full score, have been slightly adapted in the separate parts to better achieve a balanced sonority. The same can be said for slurs and articulations.  Fingering and bowing suggestions follow a careful study on Verdi’s phrasing and, for further help, every part is adorned with the text of the chorus where the cello has the same melodic line.

The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment.The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music.
