These 12 Sonatas for transverse flute and bass were first published in Amsterdam in 1723 to a very positive reception. This can be demonstrated not only by the existence of numerous pirate copies, but also through instances such as the fact that part of the tenth Sonata has been preserved in the fine inlaid work on a table top made of imitation marble belonging to Prince Friedrich von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. They show elements of the emerging style galant and are distinguished by surprising turns of phrase and an extraordinary variety of expression. From a stylistic point of view this collection represents a valuable contribution to the genre of the solo sonata, which was at that time gaining pre-eminence over the trio sonata.

His father Jakob, a schoolmaster, was his first music teacher. Later, in Vienna, he had violin, piano and singing lessons. Mozart’s friend, Joseph Eybler taught him composition. In 1828 Niccolò Paganini noticed Panny and took him along on concert tours. In the following years, Penny went to Germany and settled in Mainz. He went on concert tours to different countries and founded a music school. He wrote an opera, a requiem, masses, cantatas, numerous songs and chamber music pieces. The Rondeau is an arrangement of the original ‘Rondo pour le pianoforte‘, published by Pennauer in Vienna in 1829. It was arranged for clarinet and piano by Andreas Johann Lorenz Oechsner (violinist and composer born 1815 in Mainz, died 1886 in Le Havre). The arrangement is a welcome addition to the clarinet repertoire and was published in 1878 (plate number 22190).

After completing his studies, he was employed for many years at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where his brother Jean worked as a conductor; from 1889-1898 he worked as librarian at that theatre. Baerwolf composed primarily church music, including a Requiem, several masses and motets; he also wrote songs, chamber music and a Cello Concerto op. 48. Two of his compositions for cello and piano were published by Schott: a Mouvement perpétuel op. 66 and our choice, the melodic Morceau de Salon op. 54, which makes a good encore piece. It was published by Schott in 1873 as plate no. 20831.
