Heinrich Nicolaus [Nikolaus, Nicholas] Gerber was a German organist and composer. He matriculated as a law student at the University of Leipzig on May 8, 1724, and towards the end of the same year became a pupil of J.S. Bach. In 1731 he was appointed court organist to the Prince of Schwarzburg at Sondershausen, a post in which, upon his death, he was succeeded by his son, the music lexicographer Ernst Ludwig Gerber (1746-1819). E.L. Gerber's dictionary of musicians (Leipzig, 1790-1792; revised edition, 1812-1814) contains a vivid account of his father's tuition under J.S. Bach. Numerous keyboard works by J.S. Bach survive in copies made by Heinrich Nicolaus Gerber during his Leipzig years (1724-1727), including the Inventions and Sinfonias (BWV 772-801), the French Suites (BWV 812-817), English Suites Nos. 1, 3, 5, and 6 (BWV 816, 818, 810, 811), the first two Preludes and Fugues from The Well-tempered Clavier Part 1 (BWV 846-847), and some miscellaneous works (BWV 818, BWV 819, BWV 914, and BWV 996).

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is of course a major Italian poet.  But the story of his youthful infatuation with Beatrice caught my eyes.  I got his book La Vita Nuova in a dual language edition published by Dover and proceeded to look for the right set of poems for my setting. There are four long poems that I found beautiful and fabulous, but I ended up using only portions of the first three.  Even so the song cycle is quite long, at 28 minutes.   The work is set for tenor and piano.

The Catalan composer and vihuela player Luis de Milán (1500-1561) ranks among the most important composers of the Spanish Renaissance. His collection El Maestro from 1536 was the first publication of vihuela music in music history (the vihuela is a predecessor of the guitar). The six pavans contained therein are typical examples of the stately processional dance. According to the etymological derivation of 'pavo' (Spanish/Latin: 'peacock'), this characteristic bird call which can be performed freely and naturalistically by the saxophone player can sometimes be heard in this 'peacock's dance'. New incidental music was required for a performance of William Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado about Nothing in the Schönbrunn Schloßtheater in Vienna in 1920. Erich Wolfgang Korngold had already composed this music two years previously; he also conducted the première in May 1920. In January of the same year however, Korngold’s entertaining suite also received its first performance and its catchy melodies have guaranteed its popularity up to the present day. A third version arranged by the composer for string quartet surfaced at an auction in 1984 : this version of the work had however never been performed. The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde [Society of Music Lovers] in Vienna succeeded in purchasing this three-movement version which will receive its much belated performance almost a century after its creation.

Originally scored for soprano solo, strings, and continuo, this edition provides an opportunity for unison voices to sing the original aria with any of the three instrumental options listed above. In addition to the original text, 2 English texts are provided. The first provides the Easter message and sentiment of the original German text while the second celebrates creation and the dawning of a new day.
