The Adagio refers directly to Mozart‘s Adagio h-Moll für Klavier KV 540. Goehr‘s Adagio at first follows the harmonic and motivic events of the original, while the repetitions of the two parts allow latitude for own variations and developments. The tempo increases, texture and sound are getting denser. Against the background of the original work by Mozart, Goehr draws a musical self-portrait in a subtly differentiated instrumentation, based on his own understanding.

A Dream within a Dream is a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe and published in 1849, the year of his death. The poem portrays the subtleties of time and the human perception of it. In his poem, Poe implies that time can slip away from our clutches like grains of sand on a beach, indicating that our existence is ultimately inconsequential.

This work was originally composed in 1987 and is available here for the first time in a newly revised 2020 edition.  It effectively captures all the emotion, and nuance of the poem.

Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone. Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family. Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Bass Trombone or Tuba and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.
