The oratorio 'A Child of Our Time' was Tippett’s artistic and emotional response to the events that led to the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom of November 1938. For his oratorio Tippett used as his formal and historical models the Bach Passions and Handel’s Messiah which share with this contemporary morality the subject of the death of an individual set against the universal background of human suffering. Tippett’s use of the spiritual as a contemporary equivalent for the Lutheran chorale of the Bach settings draws his audience more closely into the drama through the spirituals’ ‘unique verbal and musical metaphor’. By 1941, when Tippett had completed the composition of his oratorio, the practicalities of staging a performance during wartime were difficult to say the least. It was, however, through the direct agency of his lifelong friends and professional colleagues, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, that the work was first performed in London on 19 March 1944 under the direction of the former Schoenberg pupil Walter Goehr, and with Pears himself as the tenor soloist.

Reflections is the fourth studio album of Finnish metal band Apocalyptica, released in 2003 with a special-edition entitled Reflections Revised released in the later part of 2003 containing a DVD as well as the original album with five bonus tracks. The original slipcase cover is a picture of a burning cello, which is also seen in the inside traycard of all versions. The cover is similar to the cover of the film The Red Violin. It was the first release to have professional percussionists playing the drums. From this album on, the band needed to add a drummer to the band, later being Mikko Sirén. Toreador II is a continuation of Toreador from Inquisition Symphony.

Franz Liszt’s first publications with Schott in 1838 were his piano transcriptions of the song cycle ‘Soirées musicales’ by Gioacchino Rossini. The ninth of these, ‘La Danza. Tarantella Napoletana’ (plate numbers 4967-9) is still very popular with virtuosos today. Later, in 1855, 1858 and 1883, amongst other works, Liszt’s three volumes ‘Années de pèlerinage’ (‘Years of Pilgrimage’), probably his most important collection of character pieces for piano, were also published by Schott.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart originally composed his famous piano concerto for the deeper-toned basset clarinet. The famous clarinettist Sabine Meyer has faithfully performed Mozart's work for a long time. It was for her that Aribert Reimann wrote the current 'Arietta' as an encore which brings out impressively the characteristic timbre of the basset horn. Together with other clarinet works by Reimann, including the concert piece 'Cantus', the first recording with Jörg Widmann produced by the WDR is released on CD.

The publication of a collection of 12 concertos for one to four solo violins by Antonio Vivaldi in Amsterdam in 1711 laid the foundations for the fame of the Italian composer in the whole of Europe. Apart from 'The Four Seasons', these works are among the most popular works by Vivaldi even today.
