An Avaloch Divertimento was begun-in fact the first two movements were completed-at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire. Avaloch or Abhlach, is from the old Irish word meaning, place of the apple trees. The sacred Isle of the Apple Trees, Avalon-where Arthur, King of the Britons, was taken to be healed of his dreadful wounds-takes its name from this ancient word. Avaloch Farm Music Institute (AFMI) in New Hampshire is also a magical place where chamber music groups come to work and create in an atmosphere free from the distractions of everyday life. In the summer of 2021 I had the pleasure and honor of being a resident of AFMI along with Areli Mendoza-Pannone, Robert Frazier, and Mark Evans as we work-shopped my song cycle, Quarry Songs. Areli, Bobby, and Mark had to go back to the real world half way through the residency, leaving me at AFMI to begin work on An Avaloch Divertimento. The first movement is an Aubade, which are traditionally morning love songs-as opposed to evening love songs or serenades. In the seventeenth century aubades became associated with instrumental works depicting sunrises. It is this sense of the word that is used here, complete with a bird-song oboe cadenza. Pippin takes its name from a variety of apple. While at AFMI I would take afternoon walks through the nearby apple orchard to beautiful Walker Pond. It was on one of these walks that I came up with the first draft of the tune used in the central fughetta of the movement. The word, pippin is also included in Carolyn Forché’s poem, The Museum of Stones, which I had set as the final movement of Quarry Songs. The final movement, Amhrán, means song in Irish and is a simple song form with three interwoven themes that emulate the Irish Bodhran (frame drum), fiddle, and singer. The melody has three contrasting articulations that must be respected: staccato, legato, and normal.  The melody easily leads to high and low range notes-excellent for beginner/intermediate tubists to expand and solidify their range.  Give more air for the range’s extremities so pitches don’t become too thin or muddled. The second theme in the dominant (E major) should be played with luscious legato and bright staccato. LassanLassan translates to slowly in Hungarian usually conveying stateliness or seriousness.  This argumentative movement breaks the former’s idyll and sets the case for the next movement’s defiance and victory.The first section is to be played serious and strong.  Increase air support for the higher pitches.  Make the descending scales resound and bounce off the lowest notes.  The second theme starting at 81 should be played with great charm and ease. For the solo passages, show-off but slow the tempo into the fermatas: (m77-80, m102-103, and m132-133). Friska Friska translates to fresh in Hungarian and in this case, it’s a duality of turbulence and final elation.Start the piece fast, but not too boisterous-embellishments are added in the repeat demanding boisterousness.  Epitomizing the turbulence, the con moto sections (at m161 & m260) emphasize a 1 beat per measure feel-accelerate the tempo as is comfortable.  The digressionary, crab-like sections (at m176 & m275) should be played as light as possible to help build up to the elated sections.  The first elated section (m188) should be played as if gleefully discovered but not yet won; the second elated section (m291), with a victorious finality that cannot be diminished or tarnished.

The 2nd Edition became widely popular and used by clarinetists around the world, and this new 3rd Edition adds 127 fingerings for a total offering of over 300 fingerings through four and a half octaves in quarter-tones for clarinet, from written E3 to A7.Author's Notes:Ten years have passed since releasing the 2nd Edition of my Bass Clarinet Quarter-Tone Fingering Charts, which coincided with the first release of a chart for soprano clarinet. I’m now already on the 3rd Edition of both the clarinet and bass clarinet charts, which are being released simultaneously, following the recent release of a compilation of three separate charts for Leblanc, Selmer, and Eppelsheim contrabass clarinets.The first obvious change in the 3rd Edition is to the title. I have added Altissimo to better reflect that these charts are not only useful for their quarter-tones, but also for their stratospheric range. The charts have also had a formatting revision and are now being published through AMA Editions, available in print as well as digital forms.The next big change is the addition of 127 quarter-tone and altissimo fingerings, and some corrections and revisions to the existing ones. Rather than creating a new diagram for every possible combination, I thought it would be more effective to show the fundamental fingering in black, with the grey keys as possible additions dependent on what works best for a player and their instrument.

According to Michael Talbot, the name of the concerto can possibly be linked to Domenico Lalli’s Il gran Mogol opera libretto, a setting of which had been presented in Naples in 1713. Later settings of this libretto include Giovanni Porta’s, staged in Venice in 1717, and Vivaldi’s RV 697 (1730).The Schwerin and Cividale del Friuli copies of the concerto contain two variants of extended cadenzas for unaccompanied violin, in the first and last movements of the concerto.The present edition present the modern edition of the cadenzas contained in Schwerin and Cividale del Friuli manuscript.Although the cadence for the first movement is almost identical in both manuscripts, the cadence for the third movement is different in each one of them. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767472). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for Double Reed quintet 2 oboes, CA, Bassoon, ContrabassoonThe style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The contra leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Bassoon. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the Oboe 1 with an obbligato on oboe 2 before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabassoon and Bassoon. The middle section has a mournful Contra  melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.
