THE GREAT COMMISSION is a sermon song which highlights Acts 1:1-11 and the  prophecy of Joel 2:28 from a sermon delivered by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers, Florida on April 7, 2024. On the day before, Rev. Roger Peterson, told the congregation by phone that the sermon coming, The Great Commission, would describe a time when, The world was turned upside down.  That lead me to research the tune, of that title, that I knew was played by the British at the end of the Battle of Yorktown. I used that tune to produce unison singing for a congregation with a stirring piano accompaniment.

The text comes from the 2nd two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence and the leitmotif comes from Mozart's Piano Sonata in C.  Jefferson was writing at the same time Mozart was composing.  This choral arrangement with trumpet fanfares boldly sings out the truths our nation was founded on.

This sermon song duet is based on a sermon  preached by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida,on September 17, 2023.  The sermon was entitled, Who is This ? based on Mark 4:35-5:20.  My song is told from the view point of the disciples who were in awe of what they saw as Jesus calmed the seas and cast out demons into a herd of swine from a man who was possessed.  The disciples, at this point in the Gospel of Mark, were being taught by Jesus directly while the masses got parables.  But they still did not know really who Jesus was.  The duet stresses their  confusion of exactly , Who is He ? It has a haunting melody to express how the disciples must have felt.  My SERMON SONGS are a new genre in religious music in which I take sermon notes and turn them into notes in scores which I hope will be sung in places of worship everywhere.

Published by John Fisher (A0.1267531). This is the fourth in my series of Sermon Songs. On June 18, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida, Rev. Roger Peterson used the text Acts 12 : 1-19 in an inspiring sermon - BELIEVING PRAYER. James had been killed, and Herod, grandson of Herod the Great, who had spoken to the Wise Men, put Peter in chains and had him heavily guarded so he could be executed after the Feast of the Unleavened Bread.  The early church prayed, and prayed for Peter, and an angel lead Peter out and he at first thought it was a dream. When he finally realized he was free, he knocked and knocked on doors until a faithful girl named Rhoda let him join in what  would be his long journey of spreading the Gospel. Roger Peterson, who preached on the text of the music, and he was so impressed he had us sing it to First Presbyterian Church the next Sunday. Moses and Miriam was based on Numbers 12: 1-16 in a sermon preached by our Fort Myers Florida senior pastor Dr. Paul de Jong on June 4, 2023. It is a ballad for one or two voices with piano, or organ or guitar accompaniment. Its six verses tell the tale of what happened to Miriam, Moses' sister when she put up a great fuss when her famous brother married a black woman. It is a lesson from Bible times, that racism is unacceptable. As of July 11, 2023, three more SERMON SONGS are in the pipe line for Sheet Music Plus, Pray for the Church,  Barnabus, and Moses Slipped up.

Eddie Fisher subsequently recorded a version of it accompanied by Hugo Winterhalter and his Orchestra. Fisher's recording reached number 1 on Billboard as well as Cash Box charts in November 1954.

Roger Peterson at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers Florida on August 13, 2023 based on the text of Psalm 19: 1-14.. It actually has the lyric of Psalm 19;14 directly embeded in it.  Rev. Peterson projected real images of a telescope and a microscope on the front of the church. They are referenced in the song.  The tune has an interesting history.  When I was a middle school teacher back in the '80's, our assitant pricipal told the first assembly there were just a few rules to follow to not be in trouble.  He said, If you're where you'r supposed to be; and it's when you're supposed to be there; and you're doing what you're supposed to do; you're OK, tha's all you need to know.    I set that to music and our middle school chorus sang it in the spring concert.   ( This can really be a guide for all parents and teachers ! )  It became the tune for this 2023 sermon song.
