The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeareās The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597. The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.
