Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. Most of the expression markings are my own additions. I have scored it as an Instrumental Solo with an Organ accompaniment but a Piano accompaniment could be easily adapted from this. Water Lilies for Solo Piano is the second in a series of Water Lilies pieces, which also includes versions for chamber winds and orchestra. Each version is based on the same melodic idea; in each piece this idea is developed using different compositional procedures. The result is a series of noticeably related but distinct pieces. The idea for these pieces comes from my impressions of an exhibit of Monet's Water Lilies at the Musée de L’Orangerie in Paris. The room that these magnificent works are displayed in is in the shape of an oval; and when sitting in the middle of the room one has the distinct impression that one is in the middle of Monet's pond.My Water Lilies are not necessarily an attempt to reproduce each painting in sound; rather, they represent the attempt to reproduce the feeling of being surrounded by these images, which from far away seem perfectly clear and photographic but up close are rather blurry and repetitive. Indeed, Monet's genius lies in his ability to make his audience look upon his art from afar, taking in the whole view at once rather than focusing on the details of its construction. This series of pieces attempts to recreate this effect in sound.Water Lilies was composed for pianist Holly Roadfeldt. Her recording of the work appears on the CD Strange Flowers (Ravello Records).

This arrangement is suitable for beginner piano students who are confident with reading notes in the Middle C position.  It is written in somewhat simpler rhythm with only the melody, and contains the first verse and chorus of the song.  Although the song is quite long, students with shorter attention spans could easily choose their favourite section to choose and learn this section or the song could be taught over several weeks.  I use this piece with students as young as five or six years old, altering it for their interest in the song sections.  Late beginner students should easily be able to learn the entire song, although I do have first year students also learning this piece quite confidently. Teaching tip:  Most students already know this song, so I have them sing along as they play, focusing on the pitch instead of the written rhythm as the rhythm will actually come quite naturally to them from their familiarity with the original recording of the song.

Echoes of Arcturus The Bear Constellation in North American winter skies,  is an accessible and lovely shorter recital piece for the advancing intermediate piano student. The use of the higher piano registers in the beginning lends a unique ethereal quality. The change of meter from 3/4 to 7/8 halfway through,  adds an interesting feel to the piece.  Could also be played as part of a church service ( Unitarian, Methodist) The choice of Eb as the key signature gives it a lovely lullaby/nocturne mood. I have scored it for a Double Reed Octet; English Horn solo, accompanied by 2 Oboe parts, 2 English Horn parts, 2 Bassoon parts, and a ContraBassoon part. The Soloist has the melody throughout. The other Oboes, English Horns and Bassoons have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the ContraBassoon sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced Double Reed ensemble sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its range, full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.9 page score, 1 page parts; 17 pages total5 minutes with repeat
