Unlike Joplin's characteristic rags, Bethena captures the sentimental side of the composer.  Dedicated to his late wife, Freddie, the Bethena Concert Waltz is mournful while capturing the joy of their brief marriage.  This arrangement is suitable for professional recitals, but can be performed by younger musicians as well.  Optional lower octave notes are included in the 1st clarinet part, which goes up to a high F briefly but is not necessary.  The first and second clarinet parts are of equal difficulty, with the third and bass part being slightly easier.  A bass clarinet with extension below Eb is not necessary, but in a few measures optional low notes are included.  A great addition to a recital, wedding, or program focusing on African American or American composers. Total length is approximately 4:30.  A real crowd pleaser!
