In the King’s Forest is broken into Three distinct settings, all using the same melody based on the introductory fanfare-like melody. The first setting is at the edge of the forest and is light and more thinly arranged, focusing on the upper voices. The second setting is further into the forest and uses the same melody in the mid voices, but harmonized more heavily. The third setting is deep in the forest and the melody shifts from Bb Major to C Minor and is the most densely arranged. We break through the forest to the other side with a return of the intro fanfare and ends with a triumphant sequence of main theme back in Bb Major. Using the first six notes of the Bb Scale and simple rhythmic figures, In the King’s Forest offers young band students a chance to perform and connect to mature musical content.

Echoes of Arcturus The Bear Constellation in North American winter skies,  is an accessible and lovely shorter recital piece for the advancing intermediate piano student. The use of the higher piano registers in the beginning lends a unique ethereal quality. The change of meter from 3/4 to 7/8 halfway through,  adds an interesting feel to the piece.  Could also be played as part of a church service ( Unitarian, Methodist) The choice of Eb as the key signature gives it a lovely lullaby/nocturne mood. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a Double Reed Octet; 1 Oboe solo, accompanied by 4 Oboe parts and 3 Bassoon parts. The Soloist has the melody throughout. The other Oboes and Bassoon 1,2 have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Bassoon 3 sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced double reed sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.

Musically, this concept is expressed through breaking down melodies and harmonies to their simplest elements, exploring spacious and percussive textures, clusters and jarring contrasts, moments of shrill dissonance, and using fragmented and jagged rhythms to form the parts of a shattered whole. Ultimately, this work is about breaking down the outside emotional skin and then penetrating the depths of an individual, until left with just their extant core.
