I then assembled various texts from different sources, cultures, and languages ​​(Latin, Ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian, Sanskrit, Sumerian, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, Navajo, Cherokee, Nahuatl, Quechua, Spanish, German, English) and created five texts with excerpts of them, each text focused on a particular element: wind, fire, water, earth and the quintessence. A specific request from Ms. Bascones was that the work be related to a collection of medieval music pieces that she referred me to. For this reason, Alchimia makes use of some harmonic and melodic features of that style, combined with modern forms and techniques, as well as some special effects made from everyday items, and deals with all of these in a way that conveys the sense of a kind of magical ritual, a ritual to call the five elements of antiquity and bring part of their essence to our time.

There are a wide range of characters represented and various musical styles. The first is from High Fidelity which has been adapted from Anton Chekhov’s The Bear and George Bernard Shaw’s How He Lied to Her Husband. There are also references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte later in the score. In this opening scene, Aurora Wentworth is practicing the mourning she believes society expects of her while her cousin, Georgina, from Milwaukee arrives to spice up the summer morning.The second scene from Dorabella’s Daughters finds Anabella trapped in a woodsman’s cottage the day after her wedding. The opera opens at the wedding reception for her stepsister Cinderella where Annabella is particularly spiteful. In a fury, she marries the next man who walks in the room — as it happens,  a woodsman — or so she thinks. In this scene she is mourning her fate. Her younger sister, Brendella comes to visit and the two are joined later by their very happy stepsister, Cinderella.The third scene from The Passion of John presents three women with their own perspectives on Jesus in this stylized presentation of the Gospel of John. The first singer offers the perspective of the gospel, the second presents a firsthand narrative of the Samaritan woman and the third is the woman who was accused of adultery. All three are accompanied by a women’s choral ensemble, flute, classical guitar and cello.The final scene in this collection comes from The Proposal. The opera is composed as two loosely joined acts where the first is sung by four women and the second by three men. The action concerns the aftermath of a proposal of marriage where the woman, Eve, asks for time to consider. The unexpected response sends Sam into a bit of a tailspin. In this scene, from the end of the first act Eve is arguing with three versions of herself in the middle of the night: the romantic, the maternal and the one focused on career. The scene opens right after Eve-Romantic has just waxed poetic about the perfect fairytale romance.

This piece is placed somewhere between classical music and new tango.   Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305   Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. Later active in Schleswig, Preetz and Schwerin, this famous Sonata for Organ was printed by him in 1885, whose introductory section is inconceivable without knowledge of the virtuoso organ style of the Buxtehude tradition.

Prayer of Saint Francis is based on the hymn Make Me a Channel of Your Peace by Sebastian Temple, which uses text from a prayer written by Saint Francis of Assisi. Part of the inspiration for the piece comes from Madison CRC, a church I belonged to and worked in for about five years, which was focused on interracial development and combating racism. It is often clear to a person who has belonged to any group of people (for example, a multi-racial church or a choir), that it takes a lot of effort for different people to unite harmoniously to achieve something greater than what any lone person could accomplish. This song is a prayer about unity, about peace between people who are different from each other. Different, in this case, refers to every sort of difference, whether in race, ethnicity, background, social class, gender, sexuality, age, religion, politics, personality, preferences, musical ability, etc. This piece includes different musical styles working in tandem, thus illustrating that differences can work together to create beauty and harmony. Though written by Christians, this is not just a prayer for Christians, but for all of us, that we may treat those around us with love, care, and respect, thus bringing peace to our communities, both locally and globally. I am honored to have had this piece premiered by the Berkshire Choral Apprentices of 2018 at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
