I wrote As We Leave because I wanted my congregation to be able to sing an upbeat, justice-focused benedictory Amen with contemporary-sounding music and active lyrics that speak of God being with us out in the world, fuelling us for the work of loving people and restoring our beautiful, broken communities that God so loves. I don't know about your denomination or local church practices, but the section for Choral Amens in the hymnal I use is very limited. So, I composed five different versions of the lyrics, so that you can use this Amen throughout the whole year. The alternative lyrics begin with Advent, then provide words to sing together on Christmas Eve. Next, you can use the Epiphany lyrics throughout that season, and then return to the main lyric for Lent, switching to alternative lyrics for Holy Week, and then finally returning to the main lyric for Ordinary Time. If you are worshipping in a non-liturgical church, that's okay, too - use the standard lyrics all year, or switch things up by using one of the alternative lyrics whenever your Pastor is preaching on the themes mentioned in those verses! For $4.59 US, you are getting five different versions of the piece, and you'll be able to use As We Leave all year long, if you so choose. Child’s Play is a representative work that captures the moods and sensations of a child’s backyard adventures through the perspective of their mind’s eye. As a young boy, I revelled in creating grand stories and playing them out in my backyard. I felt so invested in them that they almost seemed real and I endeavour to capture this commitment to my imagination in Child’s Play. The simple semiquaver ostinato present throughout most of the work represents the innocence of being young. It’s lilting nature lead’s the listener to reminisce on the carefree nature of life at that age. In contrast to this, the stirring harmonies evoke feelings of drama and grandeur that depict the sagas that my imagination conjured. In keeping with the representative nature of the work, the sporadic changes in dynamics symbolize being constantly swept away to different imaginary lands as we all know young boys can rarely stay focused on a single idea for very long. With reference to the pedalling, I have very deliberately written the change to occur between notes where specified. This creates a lucid harmonic rhythm throughout the entire piece and a constant undertone of the mysterious enigma that is a child’s mind.

It is interesting to note that Albeniz almost completely abandoned the composition of piano works after La Vega, although his fame was mainly focused on the works for this instrument. Although La Vega was planned as part of a cycle of melodies written on poems by his patron Money-Coutts and was therefore used as an independent piece of an orchestra suite, this work was originally composed for piano. According to the autographed dating found on the last page of the manuscript, Albeniz finished La Vega at first on January 26, 1897 in Auteuil, in a Paris neighborhood. In the course of the following weeks, decided to make profound changes. He deleted the last five pages of the Vega, added six at the beginning and composed a different ending of seven more pages. This revision ended in Paris on February 14, 1897, and Albeniz wrote down on the last page: La Alhambra, symphonic suite on poems by F. B. Money-Coutts: nº 1: La Vega. La Vega is an evocation of the Granada plains on the edge of the city, a musical reflection, as the composer put it, contemplated from the Alhambra Palace. Claude Debussy, on hearing Albeniz play the piece, enthusiastically told him of his wish to immediately go and discover Granada.

In working on concepts to break away from some of the more tonal aspects of music, I have been working on some exercises focused on scales that are not utilized in a classical sense, which brings us to this file.The whole-tone scale series uses the concept in the name: only whole steps, no half steps. For guitar, the best way to visualize the scale is by performing this scale by picking a string and playing only the even frets or odd frets on that string in order (0-2-4-6-8-10-12 or 1-3-5-7-9-11-13) to get that string's basic whole tone scale. This sheet music exercises the C and C# whole tone scales as they are the common anchors of whole tone scales, working all six strings and some techniques to maneuver appropriately. With this you get the two whole-tone scales and two exercises in each of the keys to get started on a less standard procedure! Enjoy!!!
