Trumpet Folk Fill in the Blank is a book of thirty folk songs and nursery rhymes. Each song is presented first in an easy key, like C, F or G. Then it is transposed to other keys and certain strategic notes are left out. Those notes are replaced by question marks. The students are to practice the first version of the song until they get the sound of the melody in their ears. After they master the first version, then they are ready to play the fill in the blank versions of the songs in other keys. We use a total of seven key signatures in this book, up to three flats and three sharps. Any student who knows their scales up to three flats and three sharps should have a lot of fun playing these fill in the blank songs. Robin Ddiog (Lazy Robin) The song, also in the Aeolian mode is about a robin whose little house is always tidy. “Open the door a little bit, so that I can see the sea and the waves� he asks. When the door is opened, the breeze sweeps away all the leaves from the floor. 5. Migildi Magildi “When the smithy’s door is open, we can see the blacksmith working.� The song describes the sights and sounds of the blacksmith’s workshop.You can hear all the songs in the audio demo, though they are played by an oboe rather than sung.

The performance duration of this selection is about five minutes at the suggested tempo. This selection will find welcome performance opportunities whenever a lighter-themed selection of Americana music is desired. While light-themed in nature, this arrangement places musical challenges upon the performers, all of whom should be medium advanced in their performance skills. This arrangement is written alla breve and begins in the key of F Major (concert), but modulates to G Major (concert) and eventually concludes in Ab Major (concert). The Trumpet I part ascends scale-wise to written Eb above high C at the end of a run at one point. The French Horn has a couple of instances of a written high G, A, and Bb above the staff. Otherwise, ranges are reasonable.The arrangement has multiple musical references to the American West. To this arranger the melody suggested a reference to fiddle tunes and barn dances, an important social and cultural past-time of the era. It seemed like a logical direction to steer this arrangement.

Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day (26th December) when villagers dance and sing around the town hoping for gifts.This tune is dorian. The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) uses the aeolian mode. It was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub. Beautiful traditional tunes.
