This is my second collection of folk songs for flute. These are slightly more difficult than the first set and are suitable for second year students. The range is from F above middle C to the high F above the staff. Simple and complex meters are represented and note values include sixteenths. Students will have fun mimicking the train whistle in two of the songs and the second player will keep Grandfather’s Clock ticking until the last note.

These are Romanian Christmas Folk Songs. As is typical of Bartok, there are lots of shifting meters, but not technically difficult. They are modal in character. Time about 2:30. Grade 2-3. These are taken from a series of 20 melodic Romanian folk songs collected by Bartok as part of his extensive mission to collect Romanian music and promote music education. They were published as piano pieces in 1918.
