SKU: A0.913678

Arranged by Clay Boland, Jr. Folk,Traditional. Score and parts. 56 pages. BOLAND MUSIC LLC, P.O. BOX 493, CARBONDALE, CO 81623 #6880017. Published by BOLAND MUSIC LLC, P.O. BOX 493, CARBONDALE, CO 81623 (A0.913678).

The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc.

Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s.

Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments.

These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern.

For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes.

You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube. And if you wish to play and/or sing along alone or with your friends or family, please do so. Happy time travel!!!

Programme note:

In 1906 the Hungarian composers Béla Bartók (1881 – 1945) and Zoltán Kodály (1882  â€“ 1967) published a collection of twenty Hungarian Folksong arrangements for voice and piano ('Magyar népdalok énekhangra és zongorára'). The first ten arrangements are by Bartók. The first song: 'Elindultam szép hazámból' (I left my beautiful fatherland) came to be applied to Bartók himself after his self-imposed exile in the USA. The third and fourth movements are in two parts - the third movement presenting two versions of 'Fehér László', and the fourth movement containing two different songs - 'A gyulai kert alatt' and 'A kertmegi kert alatt'. In later editions, the fifth song - 'Ucca, ucca, ég az ucca' - was omitted, but is retained in these arrangements for instruments in four parts.

The titles of the ten songs by Bartók are:

1. Elindultam szép hazámbul / Far Behind I Left My Country

2. Ãltal mennék én a Tiszán ladikon / Crossing the River

3a. Fehér László / The Horse-thief

3b. Fehér László / The Horse-thief

4a. A gyulai kert alatt / In the Summer Fields

4b. A kertmegi kert alatt / I Was in a Garden Green

5. Ucca, ucca, ég az ucca

6. Ablakomba, ablakomba / Deceived in Love

7. Száraz ágtól messze virít a rózsa / Love’s a Burden

8. Végigmentem a tárkányi / Walking Through the Town

9. Nem messze van ide kis Margitta / The Horseman

10. Szánt a babám / My Love Has Gone A-ploughing.

Composed by David Winkler. Arranged by www.DavidWinkler.com. Instructional. Score. 47 pages. Www.DavidWinkler.com #5891563. Published by www.DavidWinkler.com (A0.742855).

Songs to Sing and Play presents a fun and easy way for early intermediate level piano students of all ages to learn basic keyboard improvisation skills. Through this method, students learn to play in an accompanimental approach, playing block chords in the right hand and bass notes in the left, leaving the melody to be sung, played in the upper range of the piano by the teacher or another player, or played on another instrument. As the course progresses, other accompanimental styles are presented, including the waltz, march, and two-beat. The last lesson demonstrates how to improvise while including the melody.

The songs are presented in a lead sheet format such as may be found in a fake book (i.e., a single line of music with melody, lyrics, and chord symbols). By the end of the book, students will have learned 18 songs – popular folk songs, spirituals, and patriotic songs, including:

  • Home on the Range

  • Old MacDonald

  • Kum Ba Yah

  • Amazing Grace

  • Marine's Hymn

  • Dixie

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Score and parts. 34 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3036573. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533661).

I. Highland Ballad (Scotland)
II. Ceremonial (Nigeria)
III. Circle Dance (America)
Folk Fantasies (2005) for solo euphonium, string quartet, and percussion was commissioned,
inspired by, and is dedicated to euphoniumist Matthew Murchison. When we first began
discussing the idea of a new chamber euphonium concerto, Matthew specifically requested a
piece connected to folk music. In recent years, he has been interested in taking the
euphonium into folk music contexts in which it is not normally found. Thus, the idea behind
this work became that of creating a concert piece connected to folk traditions.
Although this work is heavily connected to folk music, it does not quote or use any actual
folk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composing an
original folk tune within that national style. Each movement of the work is then an
arrangement in my own musical style of my original folk tune. The formal and harmonic
language is simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.
The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. The
middle sections contain settings of the basic melody -- first presented over a bagpipe-like
drone (with interjections) and then in a full harmonization.
The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with a
simple melody in the Nigerian/Yoruban folk style. As the movement progresses, the
euphonium plays the role of a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodies
and textures over the basic refrains.
The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant -- in the vein of the folk songs of
the Shakers. A basic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrasting
excursions.

Composed by Charles Ives. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. 20th Century. Score and part. 24 pages. Gordon Cherry #1044477. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1465879).

Charles Ives was one of the first American composers to gain international recognition, although most of his music was not performed during his lifetime. Ives wrote 114 songs in the early 1900's including these four:

1. Memories, 2. The Side Show, 3. Dreams and 4. War Song No. 2.

The songs include quotes of American folk songs, with whistling, singing and more making for a lively experience for performers and listeners.

Mr. Sauer once again has edited a brilliant new transcription, bringing Ives' music to life for the Horn world. Four Songs for Horn and Piano is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
