Shades of Paisano is a transcription, by the composer, of four movements from Paisano Suite, an eight-movement work for orchestra. Paisano is the name of a ranch, located in the central Texas hill country west of Austin,once the private retreat of Texas folklorist and writer J. Frank Dobie. Now owned by the University of Texas, the ranch has for many years been used as a residence for recipients of the prized Dobie Paisano Fellowship, awardedtwice annually to promising Texas writers.Paisano Suite, originally scored for a small pit orchestra, was composed there in the fall of 1982 on a grant from the City of Austin for the Austin Ballet Theatre. The resulting ballet was produced in February, 1983 under the title Ballabile, with choreography by ABT artistic director Stanley Hall. The music was revised and re-orchestrated as a concert suite for full orchestra in 2012 and renamed after the ranch where it was written. Fingertechnisch nicht zu anspruchsvoll werden die Hauptschwierigkeiten wie auch der grosste Anreiz beim Erarbeiten die kraftvollen Rhythmen besonders im zweiten und dritten Satz sein. Zeitgenossische Spieltechniken werden nur im dritten Satz verlangt (Sopranino: Spielen mit Luftgerauschen, Alt und Bass: Sputato, gleichzeitiges Singen und Spielen derselben Melodie). Da aber diese grossflachig und ohne schnelle Wechsel auftreten, durften sie auch gut fur in experimenteller Musik nicht geubte Spieler ausfuhrbar sein. Die Komposition hat eine sehr personliche Tonsprache mit folkloristischem Einschlag. Die Melodien sind eingangig, fast konnte man von Ohrwurm-Tendenzen sprechen. Hinter den sieben Bergen macht sicher viel Spass beim Einstudieren und Spielen.

A Night with The Aristocrats (a concertante work of plucking, blowing and bowing)Versions for Clarinet/SopranoSax/Violin with Guitar and Strings The guitar part came inspirational first to me as one of my 24 Studies that I wrote few years ago.  For a while though I wondered if a melodic part should be added to this part and form eventually a duo.  A request from my dear colleague Corey Whitehead, for a duo plus strings led me to orchestrate it in this version.The work starts with a meditative introduction before the main part unfolds a dance idea between the two instruments and the string orchestra, almost humoresque which hands over a pensive thought in the soprano sax/clarinet/solo violin that repeats itself almost as an unanswered question. Could please anyone answers?  The Strings do play an important part in terms of balance and the one of an extra third corresponding force.My composition language is sometimes folklorist around my Greek heritage, sometimes around tonal centers, and sometimes simple within a few key notes, evolves around programmatic ideas that I get from every day living.  Apostolos Paraskevas
