Chorale and Intermezzo takes two traditional American folksongs from the early hymn tradition and combines them in a placid, lyrical work. It is tailored to be performed in a set between its complementary arrangements March and Caprice, a setting of two sea shanties, and Fanfare and Dance, a juxtaposition of two Irish folksongs. In contrast to its bookend counterparts, this work is longer and more patient in its development of these quiet and profound melodies.

This is a 2nd series of transcriptions that I have started in 2018 as a way of popularising Filipino Folk Music to a larger audience, especially in the Classical World. I would not recommend these transcriptions for a beginner pianist but are within the reach of intermediate to advanced level pianist. These folksongs have been arranged with performance considerations in mind to create the illusion of a difficult transcription without a need for great technical facility. The choice of key signature, which may be daunting at first, actually allows for greater scope and complexity in LH accompaniment figures. RH passages are written in such a way as to limit position shifts allowing easier execution. Furthermore, great care has been taken to create smooth ‘voice-leading’ in the LH accompaniment figure, especially in the bass line and the chords. In Swiss-German dialect, this well-known folksong from the canton of Aargau in north-central Switzerland is arranged here for 3 mixed voices. In true folksong fashion, there are 12 verses total, a story about a young lad who goes off to war, and after a year comes home to find his sweetheart now has a new love. Looking for consolation from his mother, she instead tells him he should have never left! In this arrangement, only three verses have been selected, just to keep the story short and sweet. Translated: 1) In Aargau are two sweethearts, they loved each other well; 6) God greet you dearest maiden, to you my heart is true; 8) Good looks and riches has he, and both are dear to me, and then a repeat of verse 1.
