It employs two quintet groupings to create straight-ahead, ensemble energy. The two quintets trade off melodic and rhythmic figures throughout the opening. In the mid-section, two trumpets and the soprano sax trade solo lines, then combine in a riveting climax. The two quintets then trade tight, challenging phrases as the piece rockets to a big tutti ending. Dialogue is an exciting work for ensembles with players looking for more modern and demanding parts.
