A group of men from that community enlisted as a group inThe 26th NC Regiment, C.S.A. during the Civil War. Eventuallythey were captured. Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions.  The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. This arrangement follows the standard British Brass Band format and includes full set of parts.

Its popularity was such that it literally saturated the country in the early 1960's.  In fact, soon after appearing, it became part of an effort to replace The U.S. Air Force as the official service song. Though unsuccessful, the popularity of the song remains and it is performed regularly by various units of The U.S. Air Force Band.

This is a much more lively work than BWV 813, and the gigue is quite wanton in its abandon! The five movements are Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte  and Gigue. This is suitable for many occasions and could be used as a concert work or as background music to an event - but it will get your audience's feet tapping! During this period, his first compositions were written including his best know work, the concert overture ‘The Cutty Sark’ which was performed and recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 1986. Sean Brennan spend the 1980s in New Zealand where he gained a reputation as an expert in orchestration and arrangement, producing work for a wide variety of ensembles from chamber music to full orchestra. At this time, he also became involved in the music publishing business. This is an arrangement for Brass Band.
