Dance Sequences was composed during the first lockdown of last year. It is in four movements each with its own character.Prelude - ‘Pagan Dance’ is highly rhythmic with angular melodic lines throughout with some release in the middle of all the raw emotion. As a result of this there is no clear tonal center in this movement. Perhaps a reflection on what was going on in the World at that point.Lament – ‘Slow Dance’ is more reflective almost Hymn like in its approach and has a clear tonal center around C minor with lyrical lines being passed from Bass 1 to Bass 2.The Wonky Waltz is more lighthearted in style as the title suggests it doesn’t quite know what to be with changing time signatures, perhaps a hint of the Tango thrown in before we finally feel a ‘Waltz’ pulse in the final few bars.Final Dance is another energetic movement that combines simple and compound time signatures to give a feeling of constant change and rhythmic contrast. The rhythmic pulse is highlighted with the use of Col Legno in two sections giving a more of a percussive effect. Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. The last twenty years of his life he spent as leader of the spa-orchestra in Wiesbaden and was devoted on composing. He performed in all European cultural centres, as London, Manchester, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig etc. Still he often and gladly returned to his home city Bartfeld. Kéler has written 27 big waltzes, 27 marches, 20 csárdás, 18 polkas, 15 songs, 13 galops, 12 overtures, a ballet and several „musical paintings, such as the idyllic Carpathians, his first important composition which praises the Slovakian nature. The most frequently played theme of Kéler´s work are the 32 bars from his csárdás Memory of Bartfeld, op. 31, which were used by Johannes Brahms for his Hungarian dance No. 5 in the original notation of the author. Kéler´s music, in the time of its creation, could hold his own with the Vienna masters Joseph Lanner and „king of waltzes Johann Strauss jun.
