Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Chamber,Comedy. 40 pages. RayThompsonMusic #887010. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1296860). Arranged double wind quintet/bass and optional percussion. Background info:Parade is a ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine, with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau. The ballet was composed in 1916–17 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The ballet premiered on Friday, May 18, 1917, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The ballet was remarkable for several reasons. It was the first collaboration between Satie and Picasso, and also the first time either of them had worked on a ballet, thus making it the first time either collaborated with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. The plot of Parade incorporated and was inspired by popular entertainments of the period, such as Parisian music-halls and American silent-films.Much of the settings used in Parade's plot occurred outside of the formal Parisian theater, depicting the streets of Paris. The plot reproduces various elements of everyday life such as the music hall and fairground. Before Parade, the use of popular entertainment materials was considered unsuitable for the elite world of the ballet. The plot of Parade composed by Cocteau includes the failed attempt of a troupe of performers to attract audience members to view their show. Some of Picasso's Cubist costumes were in solid cardboard, allowing the dancers only a minimum of movement. The score contained several noise-making instruments (typewriter, foghorn, an assortment of bottles, pistol, and so on), which had been added by Cocteau (somewhat to the dismay of Satie). It is supposedthat such additions by Cocteau showed his eagerness to create a succès de scandale, comparable to that of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps which had been premiered by the Ballets Russes some years before, and caused no less scandal.Although Parade was quite revolutionary, bringing common street entertainments to the elite, being scorned by audiences and being praised by critics, nonetheless many years later Stravinsky could still pride himself in never having been topped in the matter of succès de scandale. The ragtime contained in Parade would later be adapted for piano solo and attained considerable success as a separate piano piece. The finale is a rapid ragtime dance in which the whole cast [makes] a last desperate attempt to lure the audience in to see their showThe premiere of the ballet resulted in a number of scandals. One faction of the audience booed, hissed, and was very unruly, nearly causing a riot before they were drowned out by enthusiastic applause. Many of their objections were focused on Picasso's cubist design, which was met with cries of sale boche.Acrobates (Acrobats) is no 3 in the ballet, and includes some of the odd percussion : sirens and a bottle phone, in addition to normal orchestral perc. The piece can be performed without percussion....but the percussion gives it an extra something!!

Flute Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1007583 Composed by Daniel A. Walzer. Contemporary,Jazz,Latin,World. Individual part. 5 pages. Daniel A. Walzer #3450821. Published by Daniel A. Walzer (A0.1007583). Written for Tammy Evans Yonce in 2017, Partido Alto e Bembe for Solo Flute is a composition that explores two ostinatos or repeating rhythmic patterns, drawn from Brazilian Samba and Afro-Cuban music. The Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira popularized the Partido Alto rhythm (on a composition appropriately titled Partido Alto) on his 1979 album Touching You, Touching Me, with vocalist Flora Purim. Partido Alto has a combination of accented and unaccented rhythms lasting two measures, which can be performed at varying tempos and include playful improvisation. Similarly, the Bembe feel has roots in Afro-Cuban music and is often performed alongside other polyrhythms simultaneously. As a jazz percussionist, I experienced these rhythms up close on two trips to Brazil in 2005 and 2008. I was struck by the dynamism, openness, and spirit of these rhythms-much like the Brazilian culture. In addition to the playful ostinatos, this piece features some jazz harmonic structures, varying time signatures, and lots of room for the performer to have fun and bring out the expressive qualities of the flute.

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.955749 Composed by Phil Thrift. Contemporary. Score and part. 11 pages. Phil Thrift #6683993. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955749). Caprice started out as a totally different piece of music, as a song in fact. However, in this modified form in a different key, it works well as a short, easy solo for viola. This is a light piece without any technical difficulties, but the modest musical material will test your musicality. It’s mainly about melody, not technical abilities. Spirited, lyrical, reflective – those are the three moods the player needs to communicate, and always with a light touch. The first section, up to the key change, should be thought of as a song. That is followed by an instrumental interlude before the song returns at measure 72. At times there is a hint of Latin feeling in the piano accompaniment, which will require some sensitive playing to support that song-like concept. The repetition of the opening four notes in the solo part at the end should not be played loud – they should be regarded as an afterthought. Likewise, the last note in the piano part should not be a we’ve-reached-the-end thump, instead played lightly, like an understatement.

Cornet,Horn,Trombone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1347457 Composed by Philippe De Vitry. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Instructional,Traditional. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #932258. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1347457). Philippe de Vitry's Garrit gallus/In nova fert is significant in its historical and musical importance. Composed around 1315, it is one of the earlier works of the Ars Nova, marking a stylistic change in medieval music. The motet is complex, using multiple texts sung simultaneously, isorhythm, and unusual harmonies, which required a new notational system of red ink coloration to indicate the duple. The motet's text is drawn from the opening lines in the two top voices, and it is suggested that it makes a statement about the exile of French Christians, similar to the Jews from their homeland in the Old Testament, and the corrupt leadership at the time. It may make a strong political statement about the corrupt leadership at the time, as it is part of the Roman de Fauvel. This animal fable satirizes the political situation in Paris.Philippe de Vitry, a French composer-poet, bishop, and music theorist, is known for his significant contributions to late medieval music. In the last decade of his life, from 1351 to 1361, he served as the Bishop of Meaux, near Paris. This appointment was the crowning event of his court and church career. As a bishop, Vitry's accomplishments were primarily in the musical and literary domains. He was an innovative and influential composer, widely acknowledged as a leading musician of his day, and his treatise Ars Nova became a rallying cry for all modern composers after about 1320. Additionally, he was known for his French poetry set to music, creating a new style of song, anticipating the work of Guillaume de Machaut. While his tenure as a bishop was relatively short, his lasting impact was in music and poetry.

Guitar - Advanced - Digital Download SKU: ZZ.DZ-4308 Composed by Giorgio Mirto. Score. 24 pages. Les Productions d'OZ - Digital #DZ 4308. Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-4308). Following a recent experience on the jury of a guitar competition, I noted with great pleasure that Giorgio Mirto, with whom I had shared the role of juror, wanted to celebrate the experience of the competition - during from which we discovered that we had had a great affinity of thought - with something which could endure over time and not evaporate as often happens in short and occasional meetings between musicians. He did it as a true composer, which he is, and dedicated to me a very beautifully crafted Suite to which I allowed myself to collaborate at least formally, by suggesting titles for the four movements. This is how Suite n.1 was born, a piece that does not strictly respect the formal rules of the Baroque era, but reinterprets and reuses them in a new key. The work's obvious late Baroque inspiration led me to find titles that invited the performer to delve deeper into the work's aesthetic inspiration. So I suggested to Giorgio that he title the four movements with something that linked their content to four greats of the 18th century. German masters. The prelude has thus become from Eisenach because of its sometimes improvised Bach-like atmosphere, the second movement, vaguely toccata, speaks an organ language in the manner of Buxtehude (who lived in Lübeck), the slow movement has a Handelian quality - and Handel was born in Halle - and the last movement, far from being a true Chaconne, undoubtedly has the latter's taste for variation and ostinato, typical traits of Telemann who lived in Magdeburg. The cities that appear in the titles are therefore indelible to the authors cited. Furthermore, one should not think that the style of the work is in any way German, given that Giorgio Mirto expresses himself in a very joyful language that synthesizes modality with minimalism, all seasoned with a a nod to Pink's progressive rock Floyd. or a Mike Oldfield... The result of this mixture of ideas, inspirations and styles is a work that personally I never tire of reading and rereading, for the freshness that emanates from it and for the climate expressive which rises, nourishing itself with full efficiency. We ultimately cannot ignore that the note B, the one which marks in a minor way some of the most expressive works of the guitar repertoire, from the study of Sor which made generations of students fall in love with the guitar, until to that of Frank Martin's Four Pieces via La Catedral di Barrios, is the modal fulcrum of the entire Suite: it is true that the Prelude begins with a clear chord in E minor and lingers on an open ending in A minor , but it almost seems that the initial E serves as a launching pad for a continuation of the work in which the dominant, that is to say the B, is the true musical North, the pole star which guides us in the other three movements until the end of the Chaconne de Magdebourg. I wish Giorgio and our Suite great longevity and a favorable destiny in the complex and complex world of contemporary guitar composition.

Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811734 Composed by W. A. MOZART (1756 - 1791). Arranged by Pat Spence. Classical,Concert,Graduation,Standards. Score and parts. 46 pages. Piper Publications #5712847. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811734). The last of 5 Divertimento composed as Tafelmusik (to accompany diners) for the Bishop of Salzburg between 1775 & 1777. The five works are far superior to the usual music written to accompany meals and deserve a place in the concert repertoire. The original scoring for pairs of oboes, horns and bassoons with quite demanding parts for the oboes and bassoons and little interest for the horn players may also help to explain why these Divertimenti have been neglected. This arrangement shares out the musical interest more evenly and shows each instrument off to advantage. Players of intermediate ability or above will enjoy  playing the four movements, Allegro molto, Andantino, Menuetto (Moderato) with Trio and Presto.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.749202 By Celine Dion. By Harry Warren. Arranged by HELEN MARPLE-HORVAT. Oldies. Score and parts. 21 pages. Helen Marple-Horvat #3539949. Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749202). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRqJrKjpk0o ‘At Last’ was composed by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical ‘Sun Valley Serenade’ in 1941. It was recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, becoming a chart hit in 1942, and in 1960 by Etta James, who was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song is a frequent wedding favourite for quartets. I also have a version for string quartet without a vocalist listed on this site, which is very similar, but entails more double stopping for the players. I am also planning to do several arrangements of this wonderful classic, including a version with a simplified first violin part. This version is for a professional quartet, as the opening is tricky for the first violin. However, most of the double stopping includes open strings for one of the notes. This is a great opportunity for the singer to try her improvisational skills, so I have taken the vocal line from the original, with a few tweaks here and there. This is not set in stone however, and our recording shows my daughter embellishing the vocal line. Nevertheless, the quartet parts are almost identical to the score I am uploading. As I am classically trained, it was quite difficult, at first, for me to stick to the beat and not to try to follow the singer when accompanying on the piano!  It’s important to remember to keep the quartet in rock solid time so that she can feel free to pull the lines away from the main pulse sometimes. Little slides up to notes suit the style well too. Look out for the upcoming simpler version if this one feels a bit daunting and exposed! Have fun and post me any recordings. I can be found on Facebook very easily.
