It starts with an E Phrygian slow, creepy main theme followed by a fast, stormy theme in A minor. This is then followed by a calmer but still energetic development section that goes dramatically from A minor to D major to D dorian. The fast stormy theme in A minor comes back again one last time, and a shortened version of the beginning slow main theme comes back again in A minor and as a violently, loud coda. This composition could potentially be used for movies. One idea is the opening slow theme could potentially be used when two armies come to meet eacch other at a battlefield and the rest of thhe piece could be used when the battle is raging. This piece could also be used by intermediate or advanced pianists to play at recitals or concerts or for their own personal enjoyment or study. This piece is great for teaching students good hand-eye coordination.

Clarinet 2 doesn't cross the break, and Trumpet 1 is always doubled by Clarinet 1 and the Flutes, on the higher notes. Also, if Trumpet 1 misses the high E and hits C or G instead, any of those notes fit the Chord. A win- win for the trumpets.

This edition of the solo clarinet part of the Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet is a note for note transcription of what Shaw recorded on the record version and in the motion picture.Shaw’s solos as played in both the motion picture and record version are represented in great detail with the film solo shown as ossia so the player can view and choose which they might prefer to play. As many techniques as possible are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc.The companion parts available here for big band and strings restores many elements missing in other versions available.  The strings here are restored to the original voicings so  important to the style of the classic sound of the period. The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie� Brown on Trombone. There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The instrumentation is also restored to only the instruments that were used in Shaw’s recordings. There are many details that help the ease of performability of the genre and gesture of jazz idiom. Lastly, the intention is that this should be performed with saxophones. However, there are optional parts for clarinets and bassoons that can be used only if saxes are not available. I have performed from this solo part many times and I hope others will do so as well. I give great thanks to several people, who over the course of my career, taught me many skills that resulted in this. While Physicists estimate that dark matter accounts for 85% of the matter in the universe, it has not been proved yet that it actually exists. I find it fascinating that a concept that may have such a foundational role in the construction of the universe remains that mysterious as of today. My piece A Dark Matter explores the notion that our mind also sometimes circles around an intangible “dark matter.� An indefinable worry, regret, or fear can occupy us for a long time and color everything else in dark shades. At the core of this piece is such musical “dark matter.� The first three movements begin almost identically with a claustrophobic web of three melodic threads that crawl, tangle and repeat without any sense of resolution. In each movement, a different one of these threads develops into its own small melancholic universe. In the fourth and last movement, out of the gloom grows a simple melody in the alto flute that offers some hope and comfort, despite the return of the “dark matter� threads at the very end of the piece.

It is perfect for general concert use, living composer features, funerals, and any concerts/services dealing with the metaphors of darkness and light and/or sunsets and sunrises.The text comes from the personal experiences of the poet, Philip Tabler. He’d felt compelled to write this poem for a dear friend that had lost her father. As the story goes, it was her father’s last request that he see the sunset before his passing and though he was confined to his bed and bedroom, the family was able to adjust the room in such a way that he was able to see the sunset out of the bedroom window one final time in the moments just before he passed. The recording features the Memphis ChoralArts and University of Memphis Collegiate Choir ensembles performing in the beautiful and acoustic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Memphis, TN under the director of the composer on April 23, 2017.
