I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.

Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749212). Downton Abbey was a much loved TV series that ran for six seasons capturing the hearts of many across the world. The composer of the music,  John Lunn, won two Primetime Emmys for the hauntingly beautiful score. I have arranged this wonderful piece for other solo players and piano, as well as for string quartet/string orchestra. The 30 sec clip is done on Sibelius software as I have not yet been able to record this piece live, but if you search my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, Downton Abbey, you can see and hear the live version. The harmony and structure is exactly the same. I have chosen a key for bassoon that would be suitable for ABRSM Grade 2 and above. At bar 16 however, the the pianist picks up the end of the phrase from the bassoon, so you could miss out the last beat entirely if it is too difficult. Make sure that you grow through the phrases with your pianist. It is a piece that requires a great deal of ebb and flow with lots of crescendo and diminuendo throughout for you to feel together! This is a large scale Tryptich, inspired by Debussy's Suite pour le Piano.It was begun in 2021 and it kept being re-written till 2023.I dedicate this Tryptich to the loving memory of the great American Pianistand pedagoge Mr. Beveridge Webster, who was my last teacher at Juilliard.The first piece is a Prelude, playful but not too carefree, the dance-like atmosphere gets interrupted several times by a serious, contemplativeChorale-like passage.The second piece, Nocturno-Fantasia is a desolated landscape of pain and despair,a reflection of the harsh times the human family has had to endure these last three years.The last movement, is a large-Scale Toccata in the Phrygian Mode, usingirregular time signatures.This Toccata must be played in strict tempo, to highlight those irregular rhythms.Dies Irae is referenced in both the second and third movements, discreetly, just beneath the surface.This Cycle of three can be performed as a unit, or as three separate pieces.It is designed to give virtuosi a new warhorse for competitions, certainlythe Toccata.I do believe this Toccata has great technical value for pianists as an Etude in articulationand rhythm.Beyond this, I hope that this music will express a wide range of human sufferings and aspirations, and that it will deliver an emotional catharsis for all potential listeners.With this composition I am joining the large group of composers who have created New Music these last few years, music testifying to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
