Piano Quintet,String Ensemble Cello,Piano,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1499301

Composed by James Albert Yeager. 21st Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 99 pages. James A. Yeager #1075356. Published by James A. Yeager (A0.1499301).

Foreword:
Each movement revisits classic paradigms—sonata form (I), ternary song form (II), and sonata rondo (III). The three movements of this piano quintet share a common element contained in the seed of a motivic idea—the interplay between the minor and the major 3rd : a tonal ambiguity or conflict of the minor 2nd. Stylistically, this Sonata pays modest homage to neo-classicism of 20th Century composers such as Poulenc (I), Prokofiev, Shostakovich (III), and perhaps even a touch of Gershwin (II). I hope this piano quintet will offer players and their audience chamber music that is a bit unusual yet worthwhile. The Sonata embraces the lightheartedness, the melancholy , and the whimsy of nostalgia. There is no separate piano part.

Performance Notes:
I Moderately fast,  expresses dialogues of themes that move between piano and strings. The playfulness of the exposition (repeat is not optional) can give way to a more passionate building of the development to the climax at letter H. In the recapitulation the longer bridge remains steadily in tempo (no accelerando) relaxing just before letter N and theme two. The coda after letter O is a somber premonition of movement two.

II Slowly
, the bowings are ad libitum. The viola is chantlike and smooth. Violins glissando like the portamento of the Chinese stringed instruments, the Guqin or the Ehru type glissando leading to a very pure quiet long tones without any vibrato and the resulting fourth should be a pure tuning. The piano can use una corda ad libitum in softer passages, and the pedal (damper) ad libitum. In the B section (Letter D) pianist should treat the 64th notes like an ornament (upper mordent). Strings play the eighths after Letter G accents with strong bow changes. At the end, the piano lingers until the sound vanishes after the strings die away.

III Introduction: Quick and spirited
, the transition (Introduction) is measured and strict without alteration leading to letter A. The rondo theme, ‘A’ section, can slightly intensify in each successive repetition, but not slavishly. The small waltz or ‘B’ section, Letter C, the quartet might play to resemble a reed organ or harmonium—sweet, sonorous, and harmonious. The ‘C’ section, Letter G, big swell on short bridge passage, then pizz. strings become very rustic and like a peasant dance. Pianist can use una corda ad libitum in soft passages. Violins again after Letter I play similarly to non-vibrato of 2nd movement. The ‘B’ section at Letter L is now the grand waltz slightly faster and more indulgent with tiny rubatos tastefully allowed.

James Albert Yeager (b.1946)
James began his career as organist and choral conductor then harpsichordist and finally, professor of sacred music. As an organ major at The Ohio State University, he studied with Dr. Wilbur Held (B.Mus. 1969). Professor Joseph Goodman mentored him in composition at Union Theological Seminary in New York city (M. Sac. Mus, 1971). At the University of Colorado-Boulder, he returned to the organ, nevertheless, keeping composition as a mainstay (D.M.A. 1985).  He was appointed Director of Sacred Music at the Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio) and rose to the rank of Professor (1984-2009). He retired as professor emeritus in 2009 and moved to New Mexico. While residing in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was organist/choral director for 12 years at a major Albuquerque church retiring again in 2021. His most recent compositions include Passacaglia & Fugue for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (2022), a Fugue for Piano and Orchestra (2022), a Sonatina for Flute and Piano (2023), and the Sonata for Piano Quintet (2024) as well as several smaller works for voice and piano.

Brass Ensemble Euphonium - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.927033

Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by Danny Chapa. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 35 pages. Kayla Roth #3444757. Published by Kayla Roth (A0.927033).

One of Franz Schubert's most famous works (and indeed, one of the most well-known lieder), Erlkönig, based on poetry by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, tells the story of a father, his sick child, and a malevolent elf-spirit called Erlkönig (elf king or alder king). The child, delirious with fever, insists to his father that the Erlkönig means to harm him; as his father reassures the child that he is only imagining things, the Erlkönig torments him, sweet words turning into threats. The father races through the forest on his galloping horse with his son in his arms, arriving back home only to find that the child has succumbed to his fever.

In Schubert's original composition, the galloping of the horse is depicted in incessant triplets played by the pianist, while the vocalist must portray four different characters - the narrator, the father, the son, and the Erlkönig. Danny Chapa's arrangement for four euphoniums preserves these aspects, dividing the vocal roles amongst the four performers: part one is the narrator, part two is the son, part three is the father, and part four is the Erlkönig. The fifth character of the horse is disbursed throughout all parts.

Dr. Chapa holds degrees from Louisiana State University and from the University of North Texas and has held faculty positions at Stephen F. Austin State University and at Brookhaven College. He is an active performer and lecturer at concerts and conferences around the United States.

Listen to this piece here

Buyer beware, these are the hardest euphonium parts I've written. Be sure to check out my first euphonium quartet Beacons (2014).

No Longer at Ease is a stand-alone euphonium quartet inspired by Chinua Achebe’s 1960 novel of the same name. In Achebe’s novel a young man is sent to University by his village’s elders in the hopes he will return able to guide and protect his people through uncertain and unwanted colonialist developments. However, the man abandons their plans to pursue his own interests and faces the fallout of his actions upon his return home and in the volatile years to come. Reading such an affective work in the final semester of my Masters preparing to return home was timely and I have found the similarities between my life and Achebe’s art blurred. I began writing this work upon returning home to Niceville, Florida and realizing that both myself and the town I call home have changed drastically.

The piece begins with jarring sixteenth-notes derived from a rising arpeggiated-tetrachord. Ceaseless double tonguing, the lead in the fourth euphonium, and unsettling metric shifts combine for unique and frenetic effects. A yearning melody enters amidst this chaos and is a musical spelling of “homeâ€. The return and developments of the frenetic material culminates in a solo statement of this theme. The middle section represents the home of years past and features a uniquely Niceville quote with fragments of the Niceville High School fight song. These fragments make up each independent line and the music culminates in a triumphant victory. However, this victory is cut brief by the cutting sixteenth-note driven material from earlier. The finale is an exciting mockery of the “home†theme with interjections and exploitations of all previous themes.

D major. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. This edition: study score. Ernst Eulenburg - Orchestra - Score. Eulenburg Miniature Scores. Downloadable, Study score. Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital #Q12514. Published by Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital (S9.Q12514).

Key: D major.

From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach, various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller, Fischer, Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture', whose name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel, a student at the Thomasschule from 1751, who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus, neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major, recent criticism suggests that it may originally have been written for strings only, and dates, in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices. The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz, Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.

SKU: A0.1401614

Composed by Joseph Lamb. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Ragtime. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #984793. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1401614).

Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music.  The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€
But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.
Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.
Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.
One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.
This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments.  In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H.  In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics.  Additionally, because of the nature of ragtime, this piece may require more-than-usual practice and rehearsal.
The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

From the Idyll At Twilight. Composed by Zdenek Fibich. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Op. 39. Schott Music - Digital #Q15318. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q15318).

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and Antonín Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan Kubelík played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Created during the First World War, Maurice Ravel's composition 'Le Tombeau de Couperin' casts a longing look at the past while at the same time being full to the brim with traces of modern music. Each of the six movements is dedicated to friends who died in battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged four of these movements for large orchestra by skilfully borrowing melodic lines and colours from the piano setting. Matthew van Brink arranged this wonderful work for violin and piano.
