Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d'Orphée is an album of 30 short poems by Guillaume Apollinaire, published in 1911.   I acquired a facsimile copy published by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts.  The album is divided into four sections. Each section begins with an oration by Orpheus, which then is followed by a set of poems depicting animals, insects, sea creatures and some mythological beasts.  Francis Poulenc set six of these poems.  I decided to do all thirty.  Why not?

Published by Franklyn Grace Creative Arts (A0.1168951). The Earthling is a short contemporary piano solo written by Franklyn Grace in 2016, while she was still a high school student. In 2017, it was selected as the winner of the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest.Performance Notes: I have particularly fond memories of The Earthling because I remember it as the first piece I composed that truly helped me believe in myself as a composer. I was inspired to compose The Earthling based on an idea I had for a sci-fi/fantasy story when I was in high school. In the story, the main character is a young girl from the planet Earth, who finds herself transported to a galaxy not her own. This piece serves as her character theme. The ending has been described as throwaway, in comparison to certain works of the French composer Francis Poulenc. I very intentionally crafted this ending to allude to an eerily ethereal feel.

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) wrote this as a piece for piano (4-hands) in the 1880s after attending a performance of Tristan and Isolde in Munich. Chabrier had been moved to tears by Richard Wagner's romantic music drama, but when Chabrier returned home to Paris, he wrote this burlesque, a pastiche of the various themes from the opera. It was a curious thing to do, because instead of writing a tribute to Wagner's masterpiece, it was as if he instead squirted Wagner in the face with a seltzer bottle. Wagner's champion, Hans von Bülow, became enraged when he heard Chabrier perform the parody, but Wikipedia reports that Francis Poulenc described Souvenirs de Munich as irresistibly funny, where Wagner's principal themes appear with false beards and fake moustaches.This arrangement for wind band is greatly simplified from the original piano piece to make it more playable. Still, bands will find it a challenge, although instrumentalists and audiences both are certain to enjoy this clever novelty from La Belle �poque.

The work is roughly 1:45 and at the time I was listening to a lot of choral music by Arvo Part and Francis Poulenc. I composed this piece from June through July in 2003 and it was performed by a volunteer church choir during Advent. .
