The original featured a marvelous cello solo, bass solo, orchestra and chorus. This version retains the virtuoso cello part and transfers the bass solo to viola. It retains the orchestral string parts, but reduces the wind, brass, and choral parts to the piano. One of the great appeals of this arrangement is that the typical ranges of the two string players are reversed, with the cello part placed well above the viola's. This arrangement enables cellists to perform this piece with reduced forces. It also provides viola players a new opportunity to expand their limited repertoire.
