Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon)

This delightful vocal duet from the popular operetta, The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe), has been carefully arranged for wind quintet. The opening begins with a beautiful duet for oboe and bassoon, before the flute enters to play the main waltz theme. The clarinet also gets an opportunity to play the melody later, so there is something for everyone in this arrangement. Although presented here as a standalone instrumental version, it was originally created to accompany two soloists, singing the roles of Count Danilo and the widow Anna. It could still be used as an accompaniment because it remains in the original key. .

Franz Lehár (30 April 1870 – 24 October 1948) was an Austro-Hungarian composer. He is mainly known for his operettas, of which the most successful and best known is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe). Lehár was also associated with the operatic tenor Richard Tauber, who sang in many of his operettas, beginning with a revival of his 1910 operetta Zigeunerliebe in 1920 and then Frasquita [de] in 1922, in which Lehár once again found a suitable post-war style.

He died aged 78 in 1948 in Bad Ischl, near Salzburg, and was buried there. His younger brother Anton became the administrator of his estate, promoting the popularity of Franz Lehár's music.

This very pleasant brass band arrangement by Denis Wright was adapted for a brass quintet and percussion to be enjoyed.

The Merry Widow (German: Die lustige Witwe) is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettistsViktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen's attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband – on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac.

The operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded. Film and other adaptations have also been made. Well-known music from the score includes the Vilja Song, Da geh' ich zu Maxim (You'll Find Me at Maxim's), and the Merry Widow Waltz.
