By Frederick Delius. By Frederick Delius. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Film/TV. Score and Parts. 26 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #897825. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.1308584).

Another of Delius’s best-known works falls into the same category as The Walk to the Paradise Garden, being an interlude from an opera that is now rarely heard in full. Koanga predates A Village Romeo and Juliet by just four years and comes from the composer’s Bohemian years in Paris during the 1890s. Delius himself considered it his best opera to date. It was his third after Irmelin and The Magic Fountain and it drew on his experiences in the orange groves of Florida. The hero of the opera, Koanga, is an African prince and voodoo priest, now working as a slave on a Mississippi plantation. Delius incorporated a traditional Martinique dance from the seventeenth century into the plot, for which he wrote a small musical interlude, borrowing from something he had written earlier in his first orchestral work, the Florida Suite. When his trusty companion and scribe Eric Fenby arranged the interlude for orchestra in 1938 – some forty years later – it quickly became another hardy perennial on concert programmes up and down the land.

Composed by Frederick Delius. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Concert,Holiday,Wedding. 21 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3506929. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553690).

On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring is a tone poem composed in 1912 by Frederick Delius; it was first performed in Leipzig on 23 October 1913. It is the first of Two Pieces for Small Orchestra, the second piece being Summer Night on the River, although these have for many years existed separately on recordings and in the concert hall.

The piece opens with a slow three-bar sequence; its first theme is an exchange of cuckoo calls.

The second theme is  taken from a Norwegian folk song, In Ola Valley, which was brought to his attention by the Australian composer and folk-song arranger Percy Grainger. (The theme was also arranged by Edvard Grieg in his 19 Norwegian Folksongs, Op. 66.)

The clarinet returns with the cuckoo calls before the piece ends in pastoral fashion.

Arranged symphonic wind and contra bass/tuba.

SKU: A0.945799

Composed by Frederick Delius. Arranged by Giulio Castronovo. 20th Century. Score and parts. 11 pages. Giulio Castronovo #6104141. Published by Giulio Castronovo (A0.945799).

Delius first wrote this dance for his symphonic suite Florida (1888) and he subsequently incorporated it into the second act of his opera Koanga (1896-1897), where it is used as a Creole wedding dance with soli and chorus. The instrumental version would later become famous as a stand-alone piece for the concert hall and it is, in fact, the only part of the opera which entered the repertoire.

This is the first arrangement ever for piano duet of Delius's beloved orchestral work. Perfect for enjoying it at home, for study/analysis purposes, for conducting classes.
