Beethoven's Marcia Funebre sulla morte d'un Eroe (the third movement oF his piano sonata Op. 26), which was used in the funeral procession of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, is here arranged for string quartet by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). It has been transposed from its original A-flat minor (7 flats) to the more easily readable and playable A minor (no sharps or flats).

The third movement is done! Plenty of crunchy diminished and augmented fifth intervals in this work to give it some darkness. I also chose to keep the register fairly low. The feeling I'm trying to capture: despair; knowing that everyone's fate is to fade into the wind and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's nothing wrong with that; I've come to a place where I no longer fear death, but it's a reality of life that, at times, is impossible to ignore. There is a positive side, though. For one, the contrasting section is in A flat major and picks up tempo briefly! Before inevitably falling back into F minor... Also, on a funny note, the entire main theme is based off of an old song I wrote for my high school rock band (in like, 2004-ish?), using a commonly used chord progression: I, VI, iv, V7. This was when I was first learning to write music but I remember always thinking it would sound good as a funeral march. The song was called One More Life and the lyrics were about shedding the old, beginning anew, asking the universe for one more life. It feels good to finally have written this movement, though. I hope you enjoy it :)

At the end of 1784 Mozart was for the first time admitted to a Viennese Masonic lodge. In 1785, he composed a Masonic funeral music. This short but extremely poignant work is often seen as a stepping-stone between the Great Mass in C minor and the Requiem. Although the C minor key gives the piece an unquestionable funereal character, its conclusion is serene, thanks to the final C major chord.

Despite being considered one of Mozart's absolute masterpieces, it is rarely performed due to the uniqueness of its original orchestration: 2 Oboes, 1 Clarinet, 3 Basset Horns, 1 Contrabassoon, 2 Horns, Strings.

This arrangement for Standard Classica Orchestra (2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, Strings) makes the piece available to any standard chamber orchestra, recreating the color and the nuances of the original orchestration.

Open Mic Funk II was the second of three funk-inspired pieces I pre-wrote on Tuesday, 12 March 2024 at the weekly open mic night at F.E. Pop's in Florence, South Carolina. It is the funkiest of the three, with a strong bass guitar lead and polyrhythms in the electric piano and drums. Open Mic Funk II is written in 3/8 time, giving it an intriguing blend of duple and triple feel.
