Meadow Song is a 1 page intermediate level piece in the key of G major. It is the second piece from a set of pieces entitled Fiddle Tunes for Keys. This set of pieces was inspired by three separate encounters with fiddle music and beautiful scenery in the Shenandoah River Valley. There is narration in the recordings that tells the sweet story of how a young couple meet. Meadow Song is a slow and gentle piece imitating a duet between two fiddles at the close of the day as the sun is setting. This piece has both hands notated in the treble clef and uses ledger lines. There is a melody in each hand to imitate the duet between the two fiddles.  Other pieces available in this suite are:  Grandpa's Boots, A Jig For Grandma,True Love's Promenade and River of Remembrances.

This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part.     The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work.       This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination.       Jesus Shall Reign is a hymn text by Isaac Watts and was set to music by John Hatton. This triumphant hymn may not be known to young string players so the words to the hymn are written into the melody part of each instrument. While this is unusual to find hymn text in instrumental arrangements, the printed lyric allows us to play with understanding. The melody part can be played all in first position.  Set in the keys of D and G, a modulation allows the players play the tune using different finger patterns, and adds variety to the arrangement while staying in position.

Tchaikovsky used the melody in the finale of his Fourth Symphony. This arrangement was created for performance by three young recorder students of varying abilities-note that Soprano 2 uses only D, E, G, A, and B-with the teacher playing the tenor. The tenor part is also playable by a student, provided that she or he has the reach to play low F. The phrases are three measures long, as indicated by the slur marks. Attacks should be legato throughout, and the penultimate quarter note of each phrase leaned on.
