The popular Jalousie ‘Tango Tzigane’ (Jealousy ‘Gypsy Tango’) was written by Danish violinist, composer and conductor Jacob Gade in 1925.  It was composed for the opening of the American silent film Don Q., Son of Zorro.  Gade had been inspired by a newspaper account of a man who murdered his wife in jealous passion. This tango lives easily in two worlds; both ‘classical’ ensembles and those who perform ‘light’ music appreciate Gade’s creativity for its musicianship and audience appeal.  This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 2:40+ An interesting addition to a program of 7 deadly sin(g)s.

Niels Gade (1817-1890), who was born in Copenhagen and spent most of his life there, went to Leipzig in 1843 for further training on a royal scholarship. There he became friends with Robert Schumann and found an eager patron in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is regarded as the most important figure of the Danish musical scene in the 19th century. His charming cycle 'Der Kinder Christabend' was published in 1859 with titles and texts in Danish. Although the first German edition was published in Leipzig in 1860, the English edition was not published in London until 1880. With his five mood pictures 'Weihnachts-Glocken' - 'Weihnachtsbaum-Einzugs-Marsch' - 'Ringeltanz der Knaben' - 'Tanz der kleinen Mädchen' - 'Gute Nacht', Gade portrays the typical atmosphere of a middle-class Christmas evening in the 19th century.

Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817-1890) left to the musical world an extensive oeuvre of orchestral and chamber music works, works for organ and piano, lieder and chants as well as incidental music. His versatility as an instrumentalist, composer, conductor and director of the conservatoire made him the most important figure in the Danish musical scene of his time. 'Fantasiestücke' (Fantasiestykker) Op. 43 is among the most frequently played original works for clarinet and piano. The present edition is based on the autograph (1864) from the Royal Library of Copenhagen and on the first edition (1865) by Kistner in Leipzig. Gade's compositions stand out due to his great mastery in instrumentation. The same applies to these four melodically and harmonically original 'Fantasiestücke'. The clarinet is treated like an instrument that can contribute a wide range of expressive means.

This piece was written to mark the 40th anniversary of the Bon-Accord Silver Band's association with the Fraserburgh Boys Brigade, with which they would perform an annual trip and concert. The piece uses a loose sonata form with two main melodies which link to this partnership; 'Will Your Anchor Hold' and 'Trooping the Colour', played annually at the concert. Whilse these do not appear until the recapitulation, counter melodies to these form the first and section subject material.In addition, some other works with a nautical flavour are referenced; Gilbert Vinter's James Cook Circumnavigator and Robert Farnon's Un Vie de Matelot, both pieces performed by the band which relate to the Boys Brigade.
