Soprano solo, TTBB choir (choir divisi) unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download

SKU: MQ.1.3537-E

Composed by Samuel K. Sweet. Funeral. 10 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 10 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3537-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3537-E).

English.

The composer set this text to memorialize the 20 children who were murdered on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A skillful marriage of music with word captures a sense of hope for a “new day.†The soprano solo acts as the mother singing a lullaby to her child. The final phrase of the poem is a Latin prayer that provides a reflective moment: “May they rest eternally. Grant them rest in the eternal Light, the perpetual Light. Amen.†Duration 4:10.

The SATB version of Moonlight Sound Design was commissioned and premiered by the youth choir KamÄ“r conducted by MÄris Sirmais in Riga, Latvia in 2012. In the USA, it was performed by the Wartburg Choir conducted by Lee Nelson at the 2017 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Moonlight Sound Design is dedicated to my father who died by way of an accident. The title of the piece is inspired by the fact that the studio I have is in my father’s country house in an attic room, and the night moon shines directly into it.
Moonlight Sound Design is here arranged for 3 or 4 Soprano Soli, SSAA Chorus and piano accompaniment. It can also be accompanied by Hang* (available as a free download, and adaptable to other instruments such as Guitar or Vibraphone). The piece should not sound sad, but rather ethereal. It is more about longing than sadness. To create a more ethereal mood, the soloists may be staggered throughout the audience, if possible. This will also provide more dimension to the sound. The Alto section should sing the pitches in bars 5–23 and bars 38–56 with a “didgeridoo†effect.
*The Hang (pronunced haÅ‹ in German) is a musical instrument created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in Bern, Switzerland. Its name comes from the Bernese-German word for “hand.†The instrument is constructed from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheets glued together at the rim, leaving the inside hollow, and creating a distinct “UFO†shape. The top (“Dingâ€) side has a center “note†hammered into it, and seven “tone fields†hammered around the center. -Raimonds Tiguls

Composed by Z. Randall Stroope. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st Century, Creation/Nature. Score & instrument part. 24 pages. Duration 8 minutes, 25 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3438-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3438-E).

Northwest Passage is a set of “poetic landscapes†that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Each sonic reflection (movement) combines to form a larger image, not unlike someone standing on a vista and seeing rivers, mountains, and prairies—each distinct, but part of one vast expanse.

The work is scored for two versions: mixed chorus and piano, or mixed chorus, wind quintet, and string quartet. The harmonic vocabulary of the work maintains an uncomplicated, transparent (“organicâ€) approach in describing nature. The melodic vocabulary immediately pulls the listener's eye to the image, and rhythm is used as the underlying spark that is subtly ever changing and unpredictable. These three poetic landscapes should be performed without applause between movements.

1. A Willow by the River|William Carlos Williams was a medical practitioner, pediatrician, and an avid writer. He wrote short stories, novels, plays, critical essays and, of course, poetry. The subjects of his writing were often “local†images, and he preferred to see the world “as it is,†without unnecessary trappings or “airs.†He was an important mentor to many younger poets of his day. “Willow Poem†(A Willow by the River) has no rhyme scheme but is comprised of fourteen individual lines. The willow is the focus of the poem (by its title and content) and how it never changes but will always “be.†The river represents, among other things, life quickly moving by and in a constant state of motion.

2. Mountains|Marjorie Seiffert (who often used the pseudonyms Elijah Hay or Angela Cypher) led an incredibly full and balanced life. College introduced her to a world beyond her domestic and civic life and, as a result, she wanted to experience self-empowerment and independence. She prided herself in being a spouse, mother and maintaining a full slate of professional appearances and commissions for writing. Her poetry is vivid, keenly “visual,†and full of fast-paced, tightly woven ideas. “Mountain trails†(Mountains) was written at Glacier Park, Montana in September 1917.

3. The Prairie|John Hay was an American statesman who was personal assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as U. S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to Great Britain. He was a cultivated man of letters and wrote poetry which was straightforward in design and delivery. Nature was often the subject of his creative output. -Z. Randall Stroope

SKU: MQ.7.0726-E

Composed by Stephen Chatman. Secular, 21st century. Instrument parts. 7 pages. Duration 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #7.0726-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.7.0726-E).

English.

An arrangement of the second movement of Stephen Chatman's A Song of Joys. The piano accompaniment replicates pitches within an extensive set of Chinese bao gongs featured in the original version. Walt Whitman's text evokes the “great sun!†and feelings of warmth and love: “While we bask, we two together.†The number, two, is the primary concept of the song—two lovers, two timbres (voice and piano), two pairs of flowing contrapuntal vocal lines, two additional contrapuntal “gong†parts, two formal sections, harmonic dissonance versus resolution, tutti versus a cappella, and two climactic cadences. SKU: MQ.1.3461-E

Composed by James McCullough and Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James McCullough. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, African American Heritage. Octavo. 12 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 4 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3461-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3461-E).

English, German.

Brahms' best songs are small, priceless jewels. They are unusual, mysterious, inventive, bass heavy, uncomplicated, melodious, and are glorious creations! All 206 of them are rejuvenating to hear. They are worthy of being performed more often than they are, right along with Schubert, whom Brahms revered.

My having edited and arranged this gloriously pensive and nostalgic Brahms song for chorus is an attempt to build more faithful Brahms lovers. O wüsst' ich doch den Weg zurück is a magnificent, miniature masterpiece of nostalgic longing for childhood, relinquishing mature growth, and yearning for an earthly, unattainable paradise. -James McCullough
