A setting of Song of Songs, Chapter 8:6a and 7a, Set Me as a Seal was composed as a vehicle for the prominent cantor Ira Bigeleisen and his particularly rich basso voice. However, the solo can also be sung effectively by an alto. Structurally, it is a simple AABA' form, and presents no unusual vocal demands on the chorus. Cascading vocal entries on the text “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it� provide text painting and contrast to music that is otherwise gently lyrical and songlike. This arrangement contrasts the unbridled optimism and resolve of a person heading off to war with the bittersweet nostalgia of leaving a special person behind, along with the promise of return. The repeated statements of the refrain are most effective when singers highlight the syncopations and rhythmic differences among them. Tenors should sing the final statement of 'Goin' across the mountain' (m. 39) with a more wistful quality than at the start. Eight Love Songs for High Baritone Voice, Violin, Violoncello, and Piano, formerly known as Love Songs, contains eight contrasting love songs. Commissioned in 2010 by MusicFestVancouver for renowned Canadian baritone, Tyler Duncan, and Australia's pre-eminent chamber music ensemble Freshwater Trio. The set of eight songs is the result of ongoing collaborations between lyricist, Tara Wohlberg, and composer, Stephen Chatman. The lyrics, full of inner rhymes and wit, explore far ranging aspects of love, such as unexpected encounters, tenderness, Schubert and his song Gretchen am Spinnrade, dreams, dating, some Hanky-panky, and the wrong and right moves of Mr. Smooth. The contrasting musical settings typify Chatman's eclectic panoply of classical and popular musical styles, from Ragtime and Tango to Neo-Romanticism. Total Duration: 19:30

This piece may be performed as part of a collection of four Whitman settings under the master title This Is Thy Hour. A majestic opening heralds the hour that unfolds to a rhythmic ostinato that acts as the underpinning for the text of This Is Thy Hour. A plaintive middle section contrasts with legato vocal lines for the text “thee fully forth emerging.� The work concludes revisiting the opening material, and ends with triumphant, homophonic chords before ending with a restatement of the softer middle section, expressing the wonder of that which the poet loves best.
