The SATB version of O Pulse of My Heart received its premiere performance by Coro de Cámara, the chamber chorus of Los Alamos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, Karen Marrolli, conductor, Viera Moore, alto soloist, Karla Contoupes, violin, Kelvin McNeal, pianist as part of the program “Visions of New Life,� on November 5 and 6, 2011.
The text was written by the composer as an homage to traditional Irish love ballads. The soloist for this piece sings the English text and should have a light and lilting vocal quality, and the style of violin playing should have the feel of traditional Irish or Scottish music. The chorus sings the Gaelic text, for which a pronunciation guide is provided. Duration: 5:30.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) wrote Crossing the Bar in 1889, only a few years before his death. Although it was not his last poem, he requested that Crossing the Bar appear as the final poem in all collections of his work. This poem describes a person not only at peace, but also perhaps awaiting the time of eternal rest and peace. The journey begins at sunset in a minor mode and finishes in the relative major after having crossed the bar. Both the first C minor chord and the final E-flat major chord have an added F-natural meant to represent the initial call which has guided the protagonist’s journey toward seeing his pilot face to face.

The sensuality of the text is matched by lush writing in an almost constantly changing tempo. As dawn comes and the lovers part, one realizes that the enigmatic text has raised more questions than it has answered. Enchanting and transportive.

Louis de Montfort wrote the text used in this setting in the early 18th century. It is a hymn of devotion and total surrender to a power greater than oneself.

The lush extended harmonies proceed from an pedal point and continue in straightforward rhythm making the piece at once accessible yet giving new life to the ancient text. Even the most dissonant moments of the work remain firmly planted in the diatonic scale. The thoughtful voice leading enables this piece to be used in both liturgical and concert settings.

Commissioned by Cantus in 2014 for their album A Harvest Home and subsequent tours through Northern Europe, the BalticStates, and United States. Written as a companion piece to the composer's setting of Simple Gifts (also commissioned by Cantus four years earlier) this is an arrangement of this iconic folk hymn that sounds traditionally American, immediately recognizable, and not overly arranged, while still having something fresh to say musically using the sonorous sounds of men’s voices.
Knowing that Cantus planned to place How Can I Keep From Singing? at the end of their tour program, the final bars were fitted with an extended cadence to bring their staged performances to a satisfying and heartfelt close.

Mornings of Creation is a five-movement suite for piano trio. This music was created during the composer's customary composing hours—the morning. Thus, the message is one of the freshness of a new day, and the energy of creative impulse.

The final movement, Canaan Land, is a short, celebratory work. This is a joyful excursion to The Promised Land. The composer, a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, has created this music in honor of her home town. -Gwyneth Walker.
