This work was commissioned by St. Roch Catholic Secondary, Brampton, Ontario, Canada. “Life has loveliness to sell†is the opening line of Sara Teasdale’s poem, Barter, from her collection titled Love Songs (1917). Chatman’s setting reflects the poem’s optimistic spirit and the beauty or loveliness of life through lines pertaining not only to life’s “value†but also exemplifying nature, music, children, love and peace. Teasdale’s famous words of advice, “Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost;†inspire a hushed, dramatic statement. Alternating homophonic and contrapuntal sections modulate and evolve, rising to a climactic ending. Duration 4:00.

The final movement from For a Breath of Ectasy begins rhythmically as the first movement did. In fact, the writing touches on moods and motives in many of the other six movements, although the text here is a different poem. Yet the movement stands perfectly well on its own, and the poem is sublime: Oh, let me love with all my strength, careless if I am loved again. Duration: 4:14

Missa Brevis began as a wedding gift for friends of the composer. The Sanctus and Agnus Dei were written for that purpose in 1980. The entire work was completed over the course of the next three years. It received its premiere performance nearly twenty years later by the Elmer Iseler Singers, Lydia Adams director, on February 5, 1999, as winning the composition in the Ruth Watson Henderson Choral Composition Competition for that year. Kyrie, Credo, and Agnus Dei borrow directly from liturgical chant, or are otherwise inspired by the spirit of that repertoire. Missa Brevis is intended both for liturgical and concert use, and may be performed by a quartet or chamber choir. Duration: 14:00.

After receiving some not-so-helpful feedback from the choir, Willie makes the mistake of asking Heather and Julia for their thoughts, sparking a vicious, name-calling battle between the two divas.

Mornings of Creation is a five-movement suite for piano trio. This music was created during the composer's customary composing hours—the morning. Thus, the message is one of the freshness of a new day, and the energy of creative impulse.

The Passing Light speaks in specks of light patterns for the strings, with glissandi (on the strings inside the piano). [Perhaps these are rays of light.] Often the piano accompaniment gently trembles. A theme is presented in the strings. There is intensity and sorrow in the passing of the light. -Gwyneth Walker.

“The first melody is reminiscent of the opening of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, but my theme always functions as a mantra. The flutes then meditate on that tune. A transition follows that is evocative of the opening of Symphony No. 6 by Jean Sibelius. Another transition leads to a stretto, then again to a transition, and then to yet another stretto. Next comes the first memory theme. The memory theme is borrowed from my composition Fantasypiece (violoncello and bass) and the orchestral version of it, Fantasypiece for Orchestra.
