Négysey's Gallery (2001) for two violins is based on computer paintings created by the violin virtuoso János Négysey. During a return visit to my Alma Mater, the University of California, San Diego I heard the sounds of a far-off violin and followed them, finding myself in front of the door of János Négysey, the violin professor at the university. We hadn't seen each other in over 20 years. While catching up on our lives since my graduation, János took out several stunning computer paintings he had recently completed. I immediately suggested that I do a new work for two violins based on his art. I asked to see more and soon when I left his office I had a collection of paintings from which to choose. A year later the piece was completed and he programmed it for a recital at the University. They were premiered on April 10, 2001 by János and Päivikki Nykter, also a virtuoso violinist. The images were projected on several screens across the width of the stage. Afterwards, János and I would meet on Skype to keep up to date and there was always a healthy amount of laughter. When he passed away suddenly in 2013 I was shocked and saddened. I still miss his insights, sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge. The duration is approximately 33 minutes and there are 12 color paintings included with the score. Many thanks to Päivikki for giving me permission to include the paintings.

Narrative:
One day, I visited an art gallery to pass the time. Yes, there were paintings of barns and soldiers and bowls of fruit. Yes, there were stuffy portraits and lavish murals and fussy assembled things. In one room, the light was more dim. A single bench sat in the center and on each of the four encompassing walls, there was a single large oblong piece. I don't remember the artist's name, couldn't possibly have been a Barnett Newman.

The panels are described in this way:
Panel 1: A melancholy indigo, with an orange nasturtium
Panel 2: A ensanguined scarlet fading to a blushy rose
Panel 3: White lilies in a baroque golden frame
Panel 4: Charcoal, with a sprig of yellow daisies

Through my eyes, I fell into each mass of color.
My heart sang for their music and my soul was set adrift....

Here is a fresh arrangement of a carol from an old church gallery book.  It is for mixed voices SATB with divisi and includes a piano part. The first verse is a standard four-part chorale.  The second verse is a trio for women and the third verse is a trio for men.  The last verse is a variation on the chorale that has the feel of a descant, finally resolving on the final notes of the original melody.
