Latin.Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music, entitled: 'Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs, and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments'. By the time this publication appeared, Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at Mantua for at least 18 years, and he was seeking a change of employment, so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope, Paul V, may be interpreted as a form of self-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score, the edition is based closely on the extant printed source, the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610, and retains the original note values, key and mensuration signatures.

Il terzo movimento, Poco allegretto, in Do minore, che prende il posto dello Scherzo ordinario, è di stile prevalentemente serio, e si può dire che fissa il carattere generale della sinfonia. Il suo tema principale, che fa pensare a un lied, affidato ai violoncelli, è dapprima fantasioso, tenero e ricco di semplice grazia, poi diviene riflessivo e meditativo, e infine sognante. Segue un passaggio per i fiati, distensivo e quasi supplichevole, come una disapprovazione per lo struggimento imminente. Non c'è nulla del carattere dello Scherzo in questo movimento, e avergli dato questa forma sarebbe stato in conflitto con le idee che sostengono la struttura della sinfonia e avrebbe introdotto uno spirito e un colore estranei.

The piece was commissioned by Count Joseph Deym von Stritetz for use as a funeral mass to be played on a mechanical organ clock in the mausoleum for the recently deceased Generalfeldmarschall (Fieldmarshall) Ernst Gideon von Laudon, part of the Müllersche Kunstgalerie, the wax art gallery and organ museum of Joseph Müller (which was the Count Deym's assumed name). This displayed a casket covered with glass, through which one could view a wax figure of the Field Marshall. When the clock struck the hour, a lament was heard: a new one each week, one of which was Mozart's Adagio and Allegro.Although Mozart intended the piece to be played on a mechanical clockwork organ, he wished later that it could be played on a conventional organ. In a letter to his wife Constanze dated 3rd October, 1790, he wrote, If it were on a large clock-work with a sound like an organ, I'd be glad to do it; but as it is a thing made up of tiny pipes only, which sound too shrill and childish for me. As time passed, Mozart seemed to be content with the decision, saying later that the work and its installation in the gallery in fruitlessness and purity and compatibility to the works of art eclipses anything that anyone has ever succeeded in producing.

Vale la pena ahondar un poco sobre esto último. En los tradicionales dúos y tríos de punto cubano y son montuno generalmente se utilizaban dos guitarras, o una guitarra y otro instrumento de cuerdas. Un músico tocaba la llamada guitarra prima, o sea, los tonos agudos, como es el caso de Miguel Matamoros en su trío, mientras que un segundo guitarrista ‘bordoneaba’, es decir, marcaba los tonos bajos, como hacía Rafael Cueto con sus famosos ‘tumbaos’ en el Trío Matamoros. The Penitence of Time is an Orchestral tone poem based on the many ghost stories told about historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, especially those about Moravian College’s own music building, the 1748 Brethren’s House. It was used as a Revolutionary War hospital and meeting place for George Washington and his generals.   Bethlehem may or may not be a haven for phantoms and specters, but it is certainly defined by the centuries of history that happened there. It is sometimes called Canon and Gigue in D or Canon in D. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known (suggested dates range from 1680 to 1706), and the oldest surviving manuscript copy of the piece dates from the 19th century.This arrangement is for guitar solo, with tabs and note in D major key, suitable doe intermediate level learner.

The piece is at least a grade 3 due to competing time signatures, contrapuntal melodies, and persistent upper register work across several sections.Written during my time in the Army, this march emerged as a sort of musical joke. The melody and rhythm parts alternate between 6/8 and 2/4 (or 2 over 3) time throughout the piece with the quarter and dotted-quarter keeping the same beat. It incorporates nearly every march convention that my friend and I could think of from the low brass taking over the strain and piccolo obbligato to the baffling euphonium arpeggios in the final strain along with the equally bafflingly obnoxious trombone countermelody. At the same time, it breaks convention by granting the horn players the melodic line in the trio section instead of giving them the back beats they love so much. One of the stranger jokes whose meaning one might miss is the mix up of beats at the key change which was done deliberately to put the generals and first sergeants out of step. It also contains a symphony's worth of stingers at the end (because 19-year-old me was hilarious ... apparently).
