Geologicalchange? Then came Dr. Walter Alvarez! Dr. Alvarez discovered a thin layer of themineral iridium found in sedimentary rocks that were roughly 65 million years old.Knowing that iridium only comes from a meteor, he set out to find the source, acrater in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico called Chicxulub. In 1991, Dr. Alvarezwrote a book called T.Rex and the Crater of Doom, describing the scientificjourney to most widely accepted theory about the demise of the dinosaurs.The Crater of Doom is inspired by this text. Although we think of the demise of thedinosaurs as a singular event (In a geological sense, this is sort of true.), it reallyoccurred over thousands, and perhaps, millions of years. I wanted this piece todepict these events. In four movements, played without a break, one can hear leadup to the initial impact of the meteor strike, its aftermath, a lonely hunt by one ofthe last survivors, and the sunset of the dinosaur era.

Initial performances featured Luening as soprano with Partch playing his kithara, and composer Henry Brant playing double flageolet; Partch would eventually replace the double flageolet with two flutes. The use of the complex text from James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake contrasts strongly with Partch’s other works at the time, which used texts from Partch’s experiences as a transient or from authors like Thomas Wolfe.

It is mainly used in traditional Korean songs, and a representative example is Arirang, one of the representative folk songs famous for its slow melody and mournful melody. It also reflects the culture, customs, and emotions of each region and has diverse content and rhythm.“Hangangsu Taryeong” is one of the Gyeonggi folk songs and contains information about the history, nature, joys and sorrows of the Han River, and boating. It is also an exciting song and is usually played to the rhythm of “Gutgeori,” one of Korea’s traditional rhythms. However, in this music, I changed the mood and mainly used the “Jajinmori” rhythm, and also varied the tempo. Traditionally, the “Jajinmori” rhythm is much faster and more exciting than the “Gutgeori” rhythm. This music can be divided into the first half and the second half, and the three themes from the first half are compressed and connected in the second half.

The tunes in this medley have been taken from our own collection of music, both published and unpublished works as well as well known folk tunes. Street organs were very popular as were harmoniums and flageolets. The arrangement is meant for Soprano/Descant Recorder (mimicking the flageolet) and American Organ (mimicking the barrel organ). It can be performed on any recorder/flute/etc. in C and any keyboard instrument.

Published by John Michael Pekowski (A0.1317270). In July of 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft skimmed past Pluto revealing a dynamic landscape. Important new data was collected, helping to piece together the history of a world with a patchwork geology featuring towering mountains, flowing glaciers, and plains of ice. I was inspired by the spirit of exploration. With this is mind, I arranged semi-symmetrical sets with varying densities into pitch topologies constrained by numerical relationships. These are juxtaposed next to each other, helping to suggest the patchwork geology of Pluto. As I was composing, I gave preference to fluidic voice-leading and dramatic exposition. I also had to end with a satisfying resolution because NASA’s mission has been such a success. In fact, New Horizons continues to explore objects in the outer solar system.Conductor's note: The (optional) last twelve bars are bit of an unintentional homage to sci-fi, but have their roots in the triplet pattern established in the introduction. In this piece I was using a narrower set list, and interestingly these types of hommages are more common within the simpler numerical permutations of smaller quantites.
