The string quartet holds pride of place in Bologne de Saint-Georges instrumental works, with three sets of six works each. With neat but surely unintentional symmetry these quartets include his first and last instrumental works, the Six quatuors à cordes, Op.1, and the Six Quatuors concertans, Op.15. The present quartets fall midway between these two publications. Composed in 1777 (according to Gabriel Banat, the best and most recent of Saint-Georges’ biographers) the Six Quartetto concertans were issued two years later in a breathtakingly inaccurate edition by Durieu in Paris. Given the unusually high number of errors and inconsistencies in Durieu’s edition it seems most unlikely that Saint-Georges was involved in its preparation. No other edition of the quartets is known although a second printing of the set using the same plates was made ca 1782. Pierre-Claude-François BOUILLON (18??-1883) was the principal conductor of the Cirque Fernando,  the famous circus of the Belle Époque who inspired many impressionist artists, such as Renoir, Degas,  Toulouse-Latrec and Georges Seurrat, whose masterpiece “Le Cirqueâ€� was inspired by this Circus.   Bouillon was a very prolific compposer, writing many works for solo instrument and piano, marches,  galops, waltzs, polkas and other dances. These works were intended to illustrate the various numbers  presented during performances..Papillon is a theme and variations which begins with a lyrical introduction. The main theme (letter C) is in the form of a popular French romance. The last Menuet is part of the 2nd orchestral Suite in B minor with 2 options - in the original key and in A minor - much easier. The Menuets are very suitable for weddings or as instrumental pieces for Christmas and other festive occasions.
