In epic accounts from Hindu literature Surya is angered by Rahu attacking him. Indeed, solar eclipses as explained in Hindu mythology are of Rahu swallowing Surya.  To prevent Surya from burning everything up, Brahma asks Aruna to become Surya’s charioteer. This quintet evokes the heroic character of Aruna, as well as his ability to temper Surya’s anger as they traverse the sky. Moderately difficult, Enter Aruna is appropriate for College and Professional level quintets. 

As with all my original brass quintet compositions and arrangements, I play through each part on each instrument to ensure playability and musicality. I also perform these compositions with my own quintet as a second measure of quality control. Rest assured, these pieces are well-crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

This fanfare was composed for the St Louis Brass Quintet in 1991, and recently updated.  It features a straight-ahead fanfare in 4/4 contrasting with a more lyrical section with changing meters.  Great fun to play and a real audience-pleaser.

This short study for bass trombone was commissioned by the Fort Worth Trombone Summit, David Begnoche, Director.  It contrasts staccato passages mimicking notes bouncing off reflective surfaces, with lyrical passages.  Eventually these two ideas merge together.  Written for the advanced player.

This piccolo trumpet classic is arranged here for brass quintet:  Piccolo Trumpet (optional C-Trumpet part included); B-flat Trumpet (optional C-Trumpet part included); Horn; Trombone; and Tuba.  This makes a great Christmas or Easter brass feature, or a fantastic companion piece to the Canadian Brass arrangement of Piazzolla's Libertango (same instrumentation).  A slow five measure introduction is followed immediately by the lively third movement.  The B-flat Trumpet part and Horn part are definitely challenging, but well within the wheelhouse of most college players.  The trombone has a high b-flat, but is otherwise not technically demanding and the tuba part is easily manageable.

This catchy Reggae-style piece, originally made famous by John Legend, features solo B-flat Trumpet with Piano Accompaniment geared toward the High School or advanced Middle School performer.  It is in concert Ab-major (B-flat on the b-flat trumpet).  The trumpet range in this arrangement spans from F4 to F5 [top note on staff]. The diatonic nature of this arrangement (only 2 measures contain an accidental) and the range make this easily accessible to younger performers. There is, however, some syncopation in keeping with the original melody, but nothing out-of-reach for a competent performer.  The piano accompaniment is reasonably simple: a somewhat active L.H. part with chord comping in the R.H.
