Joe Duddell’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimtis was commissioned by Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts with funding from Kevin Jones and Laura Woodside-Jones and received its first performance by the Choir of Royal Holloway conducted by Rupert Gough at the 2011 Presteigne Festival. Duddell has acknowledged in the past that whilst composing any piece of music, problems arise that require solutions and this new setting of the “Mag and Nunc� is no different. The main challenge for a composer who is openly agnostic is the historical weight behind the liturgical text but taking both musical and philosophical inspiration from composers such as Holst and Tippett, Duddell’s setting is a joyous and uplifting one.Opening with sustained harmonies saturated with open sounding 4ths and 5ths, the music soon leads to faster passages that chase one another. The organ adds syncopation to relatively straight vocal rhythms and at other time emphasises denser rhythmic textures. The work is dedicated to George Vass.

Welsh airs used in this publication were collected by Edward Jones (1751-1824), harper to King George IV. Jones was a prolific collector and arranger of melodies and is best remembered for his three-volume work called Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards (1784-1802). The order of the music facilitates playing 2-4 tunes in succession as a Welsh medley. All tunes were typeset to fit exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece. Some melodies were transposed from their original keys to better suit the range of the flute. Tunes may be taken up the octave where desired, such as on repeated sections. The harp range needed to play all of the accompaniments in this collection exactly as written is only 26 strings (C-G). There are no lever changes within pieces in this entire collection, only lever pre-sets.

This delightful collection of arrangements is a real treat and something a little bit different for your repertoire. As usual, Darhon's arrangements are wonderfully playable with enough complexity to be interesting. Each of the melodies stands alone but, as she has done with other collections, Darhon has arranged them in a progressive key order so that they can be played together en-suite. Several of the tunes would make wonderful wedding processionals and others are perfect for a prelude.
