This catchy Reggae-style piece, originally made famous by John Legend, features solo Viola with Piano Accompaniment geared toward the High School or advanced Middle School performer.  It is in concert G-major.  The viola range in this arrangement spans from written D4 to D5 [two ledger lines above the staff]. The diatonic nature of this arrangement (only 2 measures contain an accidental) and the range make this easily accessible to younger performers. There is, however, some syncopation in keeping with the original melody, but nothing out-of-reach for a competent performer.  The piano accompaniment is reasonably simple: a somewhat active L.H. part with chord comping in the R.H.

His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. Gilmore's maritme experience gace him insight into this hymn. Sections A and C exposits the verse. Sections B and D are the chorus. A modulation to a new key occurs at the end of section B with the help of an Italian augmented sixth chord. Section C introduces the descant by yours truly. In measure 37, a deceptive cadence occurs, followed by the resolution to the tonic chord.

The song 'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon, tracing back centuries but copyrighted by George A. Norton in 1917, and later inspiring the John Wayne movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, is a reference to this. The symbol of a yellow ribbon became widely known in civilian life in the 1970s as a reminder that an absent loved one, either in the military or in jail, would be welcomed home on their return. In 2008, Billboard ranked the song as the 37th biggest song of all time in its issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100.

Duration: 16 minutes Written in 1783 by English composer William Shield to a famous libretto by Irish playwright John O’Keeffe, The Poor Soldier was a hit at its premier in November 1783 at Covent Garden in London.  Quickly reaching American theaters by the following year, it became a frequently performed American Colonial musical theater piece, remaining in the repertory for over fifty years. So popular were the tunes from The Poor Soldier that even as late as 1850, some of the opera’s songs were music hall staples.  Apparently George Washington adored this work and had excerpts performed for him at Mount Vernon. In 2008 I was hired to reconstruct the opera the The Poor Soldier from a series of piano sketches and individually sold arias dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. The 2008 production was premiered at SUNY Schenectady County Community College by Musicians of Ma’alwyck. This band suite was created in 2010 and premiered by the Capital Region Wind Ensemble.
