Greensleeves - George Shearing (Complete Piano Transcription)

Jazz pianist George Shearing plays solo piano on this complete transcription of the traditional Irish folk song Greensleeves from the album My Ship released in 1974.

Song description.
The solo is played over seven choruses in total.
The first chorus is a simple but emotionally rich monophonic melody for the right hand only.
In the second chorus, the melody follows the main melody of the right hand with a delay of one bar in the octave of the left hand in a canon-like style.
The third chorus is a baroque style with lots of ornamental trills, and the inner voices move with a lively movement in the basic three voices.
In the fourth chorus, the melody is finally reharmonized in jazz harmony (restructuring of the chord structure), supported by a stylish chord progression.
The atmosphere changes again in the fifth chorus, where the main melody of the first half moves with two voices, and the second half is sung with block chords blending the chords in a glittering octave.
The sixth chorus finally becomes George's quintessential jazz, with a fine and dynamic exchange of phrases in a swinging tempo.
The final seventh chorus brings the song to a profound ending.
Please enjoy the lustrous sound of George Shearing.

George Shearing was one of the most well-known jazz pianists of his era. As a composer, he is known for his hundreds of popular titles, including the jazz standard Lullaby of Birdland. In the late 1970s, Shearing produced his only foray into classical church music, this volume of organ pieces (also available in a piano edition, KK228). Shearing's appealing jazz-inflected idiom makes for distinctive and memorable treatments of classic American hymn tunes. Shearing collaborated closely with Dale Wood in creating the details of these idiomatic organ arrangements.

Lullaby of Birdland is a jazz standard and popular song composed by George Shearing with lyrics by George David Weiss
George Shearing wrote Lullaby of Birdland in 1952 for Morris Levy, the owner of the New York jazz club Birdland. Levy had got in touch with Shearing and explained that he'd started a regular Birdland-sponsored disk jockey show, and he wanted Shearing to record a theme which was to be played every hour on the hour. Levy originally wanted his own music to be recorded, but Shearing insisted he couldn't relate very well with it and wanted to compose his own music. They compromised by sharing the rights of the song; the composer's rights went to Shearing, and the publishing rights went to Levy.

Here's an old jazz standard that will live forever because it is so much fun to sing and listen to. Lullaby in Birdland is one of this guitar player's favorites. It was originally written in 2/2, or Cut time, which is how a song written in basic 4/4 timing is notated when it is intended that any performance of it should bring a little bounce to the beat. I'm all for that, but I have a rule of thumb for any song which has enough bounce, that it can be waltzed to, and this song is no exception, so I've reformatted it to the appropriate time signature. The notation in this arrangement is in fact how the song is currently being sung. I play this arrangement at about 80 beats per minute on the guitar. The chords in this arrangement are how I play Lullaby in Birdland, and they aren't too far a departure from the original by George Shearing.
