The Coronation March by the German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer comes from Act 4, Scene 2 of his grand opera, Le prophète (The Prophet). Set in the 16th century, it is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and King of Münster, with the libretto influenced by the works of Voltaire. The 5-act opera deals with love, revenge and tragedy. It was premiered by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier on 16 April 1849, with audience members including Chopin, Verdi, Delacroix, Charles Dickens and Berlioz.During his life, Meyerbeer was a dominant figure in the world of opera, with Hector Berlioz saying of him 'he has not only the luck to be talented, but the talent to be lucky.'This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Dem 1859 erschienenen geistlichen Werk Cantique tiré de L’imitation de Jésus-Christ für Bass-Solo, gemischten Chor (3 Frauenstimmen, TTB) und Orgel liegt ein Text aus dem gleichnamigen Andachtsbuch des französischen Barockdichters Pierre Corneille zugrunde. Meyerbeer gliedert seine Komposition in drei musikalisch gleich gestaltete Strophen, die jeweils von zu Herzen gehenden Klagegesängen des Bass-Solisten eingeleitet werden. Danach stimmt der sechsstimmige Chor in die Klage über die Trübsal auf Erden und die Gottessehnsucht ein. Ein wunderbares Stück Musik mit wahlweise französischem oder deutschem Text.

Ursprünglich schrieb Meyerbeer diese von aufklärerischer Frömmigkeit durchströmten Liedmotetten 1812 für solistisches Vokalensemble. Knapp 30 Jahre später brachte er sie dann, erweitert um Optionen für eine wechselweise chorische und solistische Ausführung und eine (intonationssichernde) Klavierbegleitung ad libitum, zweisprachig (deutsch/französisch) heraus.
