The Latin libretto was written by Iacopo Cassetti, and it's base on the Book of Judith. Vivaldi wrote this oratorio for the ensemble (the orchestra and chorus) of the Ospedale della Pietà. The interesting fact that all characters (male and female), choruses line (originally written in SATB – mixed chorus range) and orchestral lines were sung and played by women. For beginners, it may be difficult to hear the different parts for the piece and technically difficult to play the piece. In this arrangement, the voices are split into 3 violins. This enables violinists to play this piece together and appreciate the various parts both separately and together in the Fugue. While doing the arrangement, reference was made with JS Bach's own transcription of this piece for Organ (BWV 539). With the expanded musical palette of the Organ transcription, much insight can be gained into Bach's ideas on this Fugue. Portions of the Organ version were incorporated to this arrangement, especially where there is only 1 melody line. In addition, the theme is also repeated over some single melody lines. The first movement is light and airy, almost evoking the image of a late romantic drawing room. The 2nd movement is slow and sad, evoking the sense of a maiden weeping for a lost love. This movement needs to be played with a lot of passion and all parts need to use their warmest vibrato. The final movement portrays a laughing, glittery ball. Dancers in evening dress whirl around the dance floor. The cello has a leading role. This was originally written in 2005 and added to over the next two or three years. I'm currently working on my second quartet.
