With a running time of just over two and a half minutes, this lively piece is sure to please performers and audiences alike. The work was first performed at a concert in Ben’s Theater Jomtien by the Salaya Quartet, a distinguished group of musicians who at the time were section leaders in the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. The first performance of the original oboe version of this work was given by Cooper Wright (oboe); Inga Causa (violin); Dr Danny Keasler (viola) and Martin Szawelski (cello).  Although originally conceived as an encore piece, this lively work will enliven any concert program. It’s written in G major with two bright and rhythmic outer sections and a more reflective middle section that briefly gives the melody to the cello. The oboe part requires an experienced player but it is not especially challenging in terms of range. The cello part remains in the bass clef throughout. The work is also available scored for flute and string trio. The score has seven pages and the four instrumental parts have three pages each, with slightly enlarged print to facilitate performance. The score and parts are contained music in a single 20-page PDF file.     Dr Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service.   He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA.

Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The thème of this set of variations was probably originally written by the 19th century Flute Virtuosos Paul-Agricole Génin (although it may also be of traditional original) and was used as a subject for variations by such composers as Bosch, Liszt and Arban, among others. Demersseman wrote a number of versions of this work, including an orchestration for wind band.

We first published the complete Introduction, Theme and Variations for Euphonium in 1991 and performed it on a 1830s ophicleide and a 1840s square piano in 1993. Solo part in treble and bass clef.Message from Sean Brennan:This arrangement, or more correctly transcription, was first published by us in 1991, although its origins go back much further than that. I do remember being transfixed in the 1970s by Richard Stoltzman’s recording of the original form of the work for clarinet and orchestra. I was convinced it would work for Euphonium and that one day there would be players with the technique, and above all musicality, to bring it off. For me, this vision came true in 1994 when we first performed the piece in Birmingham in 2004, and then again 10 years later when David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band recorded the Theme and Variations. Rossini composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and orchestra in 1810 at the request of a fellow student at the Conservatorio di Bologna. Although the autograph score has been lost, and some musicologists have questioned the authenticity of the work, I find no reason for doubt since Rossini recycled some of the material in later works, and apart from that his evervascent musical personality is abundant from beginning to end.

This theme is originally attributed to Franz Joseph Haydn, who included it as the slow movement of his Divertimento for Winds in Bb, Hob.II:46. However, it's uncertain whether he actually wrote the theme or took it from another source (like a hymn tune, which the St. Anthony name would suggest, or a folksong). Several decades later, Johannes Brahms ran across Haydn's Divertimento, liked the theme, and used it in his Variations on a Theme by Haydn, now the most famous setting of this theme. Carl Czerny also used it for a variation set. Specifically arranged for the early-stage piano student who is just beginning to play hands together, and for teachers who don't wish to prolong the hands alone stage, this unique adaptation keeps the hands in rhythmic unison and symmetrical contrary motion, optimizing ease of playing when first beginning to engage the both hands motor area of the brain. Throughout the piece, the student uses the same finger at the same time in both hands, and the fingers are matched to both-white or both-black keys, respectively. Strongly auditory and kinesthetic learners who don't require visual feedback may successfully learn this piece via rote instruction, too. This arrangement has also been designed so that it can work in both 2-piano 4-hands and 1-piano 4-hands settings.Additionally, the transposition to G-flat major (from B-flat) allows the student to take advantage of the black keys' inherent posture- and accuracy-enhancing qualities, which are vital in those early lessons when correct technique habits need to be installed. Finally, particularly for the adult student who's keen to dive into the classical repertoire: this is a genuine, well-known piece of music treated by multiple famous composers from the common practice era. Even finicky audience members will enjoy this piece, which will not sound like something a first-year piano student might play: some of the world's most elite orchestras have also recorded this work in Brahms's arrangement. Given that the tune is potentially a bit long for a beginner student, I've placed a double bar after m. 10, noting that if necessary, a student could excerpt mm. 1-10 and perform these without the middle section and return of A. I have not reproduced Haydn's original(?) repeats, but the student and teacher could add them if desired. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument.
