Asturias, original title Preludio, also called Asturias-Leyenda is a solo piano piece written in the early 1890s by Catalan composer and pianist Isaac Albéniz using rolled chords that effectively evoke the strumming of a guitar. In fact, the version usually played is a transcription of the original piano piece for guitar. Despite being called Asturias-which is the name of a northern region of Spain the piece powerfully evokes the distinctive flamenco, or gypsy, music of Andalusia, the southernmost region of the country.  Written while he was living outside his homeland, it was intended to conjure the Alhambra, the palace and fortress of the Moorish, monarchs of Granada. The composition has two main melodies. First comes a determined, driving theme that builds in energy. A more melancholy middle section follows. After the contemplative middle section, the opening melody returns and brings the piece to its conclusion.

Written for solo piano, a musical depiction of the world's struggle with Covid 19, the deadly corona virus that has closed almost everything and taken the world's citizens away from their daily routines is told.  The piece begins with mysterious intrigue, much as the disease did as it began to sweep across the globe.  The music gets faster and agitated as more and more people find suffering amid the confusion.  There are breaks of calm  that give the listener a chance to breathe, and try to evaluate his or her life in dealing with the virus.  A prayerful hymn-like tune drawing upon rhythms from earlier places in the music brings the piece to its conclusion.  .

I have spent many a happy evenings on stages and in orchestra pits with this phenomenal musician. For many years Cathy served as principle trumpet of the Capital Region Wind Ensemble, a group I am lucky enough to lead as Music Director. The original version of this piece, generously commissioned by Cathy, was for solo trumpet and wind ensemble and premiered in 2013 by Cathy and the Capital Region Wind Ensemble. In the summer of 2013, as I was coming up with ideas for Cathy, I could hear the happy sounds of my neighbors’ children playing next door. On a beautiful summer evening, as the kids were winding down, it occurred to me to write a lullaby, a Berceuse.

Sendai, Op. 156, for brass quintet was started 5 Apr 2024 and completed 30 May 2024.  It was originally intended to be a short composition to accompany some time lapse footage that I captured in the Sendai region in Japan, north of Tokyo.  The compositional process expanded the work well beyond the combined videos’ duration.  Despite some of my somber experiences observing the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami, the region’s resilience surpasses the mourning.  This work reflects the upbeat optimism so prevalent in the area.  Duration: 3:10.
